What You Need to Know About Head and Neck Cancer, but Were Afraid to Ask
Speech pathologists receive limited training in the specialized care of patients with
head and neck cancer. With the rising incidence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
associated head and neck cancers, speech pathologists will be increasingly called
upon to provide care for this population. In this session we will discuss changing
trends in head and neck cancer, review up-to-date research regarding outcomes
associated with head and neck cancer treatment, and provide clinical strategies
that can be applied in a variety of clinical settings.
Heather Starmer, M.A., CCC-SLP is an Assistant Professor in the Department of
Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Heather
completed her undergraduate work at California State University at Long Beach and her
Master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh. Her clinical experience began at the VA
Pittsburgh Medical Center where she developed her interests in the rehabilitation of
patients with head and neck cancers. Areas of clinical and research interest include
management of speech and swallowing deficits associated with head and neck cancer,
laryngectomy rehabilitation, and voice disorders.
