Contend (Part 1) – Aimée Walker – Ephesians 6:10-18 Victory is not dependent on our strength, but on God’s (6:10) (2 Cor 12:9-10) Language of ‘be strong in the Lord’ is to receive strength, to be strengthened, to increase in strength. It is something that is given to us. Trio of ‘strong’ words in this verse are the same trio of words used in Ephesians 1:1920 – the power that we are given is the same power that raised Christ from the dead! Our part is to ‘suit up’ (6:11 & 13) Putting on requires an action on our part – victory is a partnership of divine enabling and human co-operation Paul repeats the phrase ‘full armour’ twice. Word used was panoplia and had the connotation of the full and complete armour of a heavily-armed soldier. Our armour is divine in nature (Isaiah 59:15-17 & 2 Cor 10:3-5) We must understand our enemy (6:11-12) Need to avoid unhealthy extremes – if we fail to understand our enemy we will fail to understand our need for God’s armour and strength Our enemy is cunning (v 11), wicked and powerful (v 12) Need to understand our authority in the heavenly realms (Eph 1:3; 1:21;2:6;3:10) The belt of truth is not an accessory! (6:14) The belt that Paul had in mind was usually made of leather and belonged to the soldier’s undergarments rather than his armour. It was an essential item that gathered his tunic together and held his sword; it ensured that he was unimpeded on the battlefield. Satan is our accuser and the father of lies; lying is his native language (John 8:44) He who belongs to God hears what God says – we must hear God’s truth. Without His truth being foundational to our lives everything else will fall down around us. Now finally, my beloved ones, be supernaturally enthused with strength through your lifeunion with the Lord Jesus. Stand strong with the force of His explosive power flowing in and through you. Put on the full suit of arms that God wears when He goes into battle, so that you will be protected as you take a stand against the evil strategies of the accuser! Your hand-tohand combat is not with human beings, but with the highest principalities and authorities operating in rebellion under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits that hold this dark world in bondage. Because of this you must wear all the armour that God provides so you're protected as you confront the Slanderer, for you are destined for all things and will rise victorious. Put on truth as a belt to strengthen you to stand in triumph. Put on holiness as the protective armour that covers your heart. Stand on your feet alert, then you will always be ready to share the blessings of peace as you subdue your enemies. In every battle, take faith as your wrap-around shield, for it is able to extinguish the blazing arrows coming at you from the evil one! Embrace the power of salvation’s full deliverance, like a helmet to protect your thoughts from lies. And take the mighty Spirit- Sword of the spoken Word of God. Pray passionately in the Spirit, as you constantly intercede with every form of prayer at all times. Pray the blessing of God upon all His believers – Eph 6:10-18 from the Passion Translation/Paraphrase
