Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance Job Family and Level: Research and Teaching Level 5 extended Contract Status: Permanent Hours of Work: Full-time Location: University Park Reporting to: Head of School The Purpose of the Role: The School of Psychology is looking to recruit an Assistant Professor to further enhance the School’s reputation. The post holder will be expected to conduct an original nationally and internationally recognised research programme leading to high quality publications and external grant income. The successful candidate will contribute to the School’s excellent reputation in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, by developing and delivering high quality teaching (lectures, lab classes, seminars, tutorials & project supervision). The post holder will also be required to make a significant contribution to the School via administrative management and/or co-ordination of specific research and/or teaching activities. Main Responsibilities 1. Conduct and supervise others conducting original research in psychology and/or cognitive neuroscience, resulting in publications in internationally recognised peer reviewed journals. Participate in meetings and conferences in order to disseminate research findings. Win grant awards from external bodies to fund new research. 2. Plan, prepare and deliver high quality taught modules in psychology for undergraduates (core BPS curriculum topics at levels 1 & 2, including practical classes) and postgraduate students to enhance the School’s reputation for excellence in teaching. 3. Deliver and/or support teaching through the use of a virtual learning environment (Moodle). Supervise (or co-supervise) and examine postgraduate PhD students engaged in original research. 4. 5. Supervise final year undergraduate student projects and supervise /support postgraduate students registered on our MSc programme(s). 6. To coach and support tutorial groups, developing their knowledge and their learning skills, and be responsible for the pastoral care of students. Be responsible for some School-level administrative duties (e.g. in areas such as admissions, examinations, module convening etc.). Attend committees, meetings and/or working groups within the School of Psychology. Represent the School on various committees and working groups in the wider University and Any other duties appropriate to the grade and role as required by the Head of School or his/her nominated staff. 7. 8. Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications & Experience Essential Qualifications/ PhD, or equivalent, in relevant Education area. Skills/Training Experience Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex and conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding as well as to peers. Good time management skills. Knowledge and experience required to teach in appropriate areas of undergraduate and/or Masters Psychology courses. Good interpersonal skills & an ability to build relationships and collaborate with others, internally and externally. Extensive knowledge and understanding of specialised areas of psychology and/or cognitive neuroscience. Significant postdoctoral research and teaching experience. Outstanding publication record for career level/stage. Experience of delivering teaching of Psychology at levels 1 and/or level 2. Desirable Postgraduate/Higher education teaching qualification or equivalent (e.g. PGCHE). Membership of a Professional Body/Society e.g. BPS, EPS etc. Ability to use and develop appropriate teaching materials. Teaching in higher education. Track record in publishing research work in peerreviewed journals of a national or international quality and of success in obtaining external funding for research projects. Experience of supporting and motivating students and/or providing pastoral care. Experience of delivering teaching at level 4 (Masters). Experience of assessing students’ work. Decision Making i) taken independently by the role holder; Planning general research programme and direction. Making individual decisions about design and conduct of particular experiments. Devising applications for new research funding. Planning the content and delivery of teaching. ii) taken in collaboration with others; Collaborative research applications. Structure/content of joint modules. iii) referred to the appropriate line manager by the role holder. Any items implying changes in School policy.
