Technical Resources Manager Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE) Faculty of Engineering University of Waterloo THE OPPORTUNITY The University of Waterloo is actively seeking an experienced Civil or Environmental Engineering Technologist or Engineer who exemplifies our University’s commitment to excellence and innovation. The Technical Resources Manager embraces the role they play in the effective operation of CEE laboratories and the department’s health and safety program, and the interaction this entails among technical staff, faculty and students. The ideal candidate will have a broad and diverse range of talents and an investigative and natural curiosity to absorb and learn from those around him/her. Working closely with and reporting to the Administrative Officer, the Technical Resources Manager will work in a collaborative environment with a highly committed team of technicians or technologists, faculty members, students and other staff across the department, the faculty and the university. The advanced level of guidance, instruction and technical assistance to be provided will require the incumbent to have extensive practical and theoretical knowledge, preferably in a research setting, acquired through a multi-disciplinary engineering background in civil or environmental engineering. Managing state-of-the-art facilities and highly qualified personnel, together with being ‘hands on’ in the lab, requires someone who thrives on challenge, collaboration, and a work environment where creativity and thinking outside the box flourish. The incumbent will understand the importance of keeping current with industry trends, believe in an open and supportive work environment, and instill a culture of safety through education and action. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and organization skills, the ability to adapt knowledge and to innovate, and a proven ability to guide, mentor and professionally develop staff. Independent judgment in areas of time management, task prioritization and decision-making and a proven ability to manage a large volume of work, conflicting priorities and deadlines is required. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Maintaining an open, supportive and collegial environment, the Technical Resources Manager will: provide technical leadership to the department by serving as senior technical advisor to faculty, other technical staff and students be responsible for the human resource management of the technical staff, including recruitment, performance management and evaluation, succession planning and professional development be responsible for the day-to-day and overall management of the department’s health and safety program, ensuring that safety standards are met in all laboratories have superior technical skills and abilities in at least one specific area of Civil & Environmental Engineering and be a generalist in others QUALIFICATIONS BASc in Civil Engineering with a minimum 10 year’s work experience in a research or relevant industrial setting; or MASc in Civil Engineering with a minimum five year’s work experience in a research or relevant industrial setting; or three-year Technologist Diploma in Civil Engineering with a minimum 15 year’s work experience in a research or relevant industrial setting. 1 ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO In just half a century, the University of Waterloo, located at the heart of Canada's technology hub, has become one of Canada's leading comprehensive universities with 35,000 full- and part-time students in undergraduate and graduate programs.
