Student Government Association Senate Meeting Tuesday, April 5, 2011 3:45pm BC Rooms Student Union I. Call to Order 3:50 p.m. II. Pledge of Allegiance III. Invocation – Senator Scott Hull IV. Roll Call – Secretary Danielle Brown V. Approval of Minutes VI. Approval of Agenda VII. Special Orders of the Day a. Kim Redford They are upgrading Blackboard to Blackboard 9.1. There are significant changes. There will be web training for students. Microsoft Software: University is renegotiating with Microsoft. Longwood/Dell laptops will no longer come loaded with Microsoft software. Students will purchase software from journeyEd via the web and/or Bookstore at a discounted cost. Students will need to bring disks that ship with laptop. Portal Replacement: Will replace myLongwood in fall 2011 with myCampus portal. Their goal is to facilitate registration in October in the new portal. IITS will work with students to input on the new portal. myLongwood will be available for a time in the Fall 2011. Questions? Callie Darling wanted to know what we could do better about the election process on Blackboard. Another man with Kim said that with the short time span of doing everything. He is hoping that everything will be going good by freshman elections next semester. Ben Brittain wanted to thank Javari for all the election stuff. He wanted to know if there is a way to run elections through the new portal system. Before they launch a new system they want to do some testing. Nicolas Schooley stated that he bought Microsoft 2010 for a cheaper price than this journeyEd account. Kim stated that it is more expensive, but it is a reasonable price. Nicolas is saying that it is the same software and cheaper so they should look into this website. Ashley Cornell was wondering if this software will be supported by financial aid for students. Kim says it will be similar to a book purchase at the bookstore and there will definitely be something implemented. Brandon Fry stated that it worried him about them letting students know over the summer, but Kim says that she hopes to get stuff out before the students leave. b. SFC Report: none c. Representative of the Week “ROW” Award : Awarded to James Pinc for his outstanding work in the senate. VIII. Public Comment Jillian Katie and Kathy: On behalf of their English 400 project they think that Longwood should offer a First Aid Certification class for one day for about $60.00 per student. The benefits are that they are a job requirement. Jessi Miller stated that Gus Hemmer offers a first aid class that they could look into. Ben wants to know what they would like the SGA to do. They are hoping we could partially fund this. Peter Mancuso: He wanted to talk about the medallion bail out. He knows there is nothing we can do about it now, but he thinks it is unacceptable. James Pinc stated that this money will be paid back to the student government. Peter stated that he would Sarah Nichols: She wanted to take this opportunity to tell us that they are having an event called “Keep the Tuition Low” on April 21st at 5p.m. There will be a petition and ways for students to voice their opinion on the rising tuition issue. Kyle Yantis: Kyle saw at an open house that 65% of the freshmen drop out after their first year. He thinks that we should drop from D1 to D2 and have the money going where it needs to go. Callie wanted to know if he was in contact with Tim Perkins. Ben Brittain stated that he doesn’t think his statistics are incorrect, but we will look into this. Keenan Crump wanted to know how sports are correlated into this. Kyle stated that a lot of this is here say. We pay about $2,000.00 to sports stated Ben. Savannah wanted to thank him for voicing his opinion. Gina is saying that we need to get the right words and stats out there. Ashley Cornell wanted to say we are a young division school and independent which means were aren’t in a conference. She believes D1 is appealing to students. Callie wanted to say to not be afraid to go to faculty members. Nicolas Schooley stated that he goes back in forth about the division issue. Being in D1 will alleviate some of the cost. IX. Open Forum Jessi Miller noticed that the Chicfila landings bike racks are very full. Kyle Pemberton stated that a student wanted to see the jelly beans back in the Student Union. Allie Smith wanted to talk about how unfortunate the medallion issue was. She also wanted to thank us for taking care of this issue. X. Orders of the Day a. Executive Report – President Benjamin Brittain: The New York Times in Ruffner is now worked out and being delivered. He is worried that faculty and staff are taking those papers so we are going to put a note up that these are just for students. Emily wanted to see if we could get some more papers with the Readership program for faculty. Locations are the Greenwood Lib, D-hall, Ruffner and Chichester. Bills need to be turned into Ben b. Committee Reports Emily thinks that elections went well and if anyone has any concerns or questions to let her know. Steven Sommer brought up compatibility. George Mason is doing their elections through Collegiate Link and we use that so we could look into this being a new route for elections. Scott Hull wants to know how vacant positions will be filled. Nick Sneed took the floor and stated that there were some names that were submitted that were not in good standing so there will be applications out for that through Tim Pierson via e-mail. Allie Smith said they just had enough. Allie wants to see Honor and J Board working with SGA during elections. VA 21: Conference Call is tomorrow. Academic Affairs is going great. Meeting is next Wednesday Nancy announced a bunch of sporting events and spirit committee is after today’s meeting. Matthew Hovey brings Phi Mu Delta constitution. Emily VanDaniker moves to approve the Phi Mu Delta constitution. Motion passed. Hovey’s Sustainability Committee met and they are coming up with some good ideas. Alyssa’s committee is working with skateboarding and bicyclist people to start a publicity campaign. Shannon brought up how the Disabilities Center does not support Physical Disabilities. Many senators commented on this. Shannon had issues with the police department and getting rides for a disability. Tim Pierson spoke on this issue and how the police can definitely help at night, but not necessarily give rides to students at any point in time. XI. Old Business a. Second Reading of the Medical Amnesty Act of 2011 James’ committee supports this Act. There were a few changes, but they were mostly wording issues. Gina wants to know how students would know about this bill. James’ committee noticed this and they say that the student’s health is important. Callie says our job on the senate to educate. Ben stated that he will not sign the bill. Jessi wants to know why he will not. Ben stated that he does not agree with this bill and he will not speak on it. Savannah wants to know how to educate students on this new issue. She believes it could be tricky. Callie stated that the bill is not saying anyone can go out and get drunk and get caught and not get in trouble. James thinks that passing this legislation shows that we care more about the students. Gina states that she doesn’t think this is necessary. Tucker wanted a point of clarification. Tucker feels students should be held accountable for their actions. Scott wanted to ask about Tim Pierson’s view on this. Tim says we practice this very practice. There is a mixed opinion on this. Our drug policy is firm and clear. Tim thinks it’s a good thing to talk about. Peter Mancuso thinks this is a wonderful bill. Jessi wants a point of clarification. Brandon stated to talk to him after the meeting if you have anything about repercussions. Ben Tyree thinks it is good to receive amnesty from Longwood. They will possibly get in trouble from the town of Farmville which he believes is punishment enough. Emily moved to make an amendment to remove the word harsh. This was accepted. She made a motion to approve the Second Reading of the Medical Amnesty Act. Motion passed. XII. New Business a. First Reading of the SFC Bylaws Changes: Emily read these. b. Announcements Ben forgot to mention that we will have an open forum on Monday at 4 in the Ballroom. Ben Tyree wants us to get the clocks all on the same page throughout the student union. Hovey read about the Toms shoes that the Amor club is selling. And he would love to see us kick off our shoes today for awareness. Brandon and Ben Tyree kicked of their shoes.
