Honors Biology Unit 4 – Circulatory and Respiratory Systems Name_______________________________ Date_____________________ block___ Textbook: Chapters 22 and 23 Unit Test: 60pt test on Tuesday Nov 26 Essential Questions 1. What is the difference between arteries, capillaries, and veins? What is the systemic circuit and the pulmonary circuit? 2. Name the chambers of the heart and all the valves. Explain what the pacemaker is and how it maintains the heartbeat rhythm. What is blood pressure and why is it reported as two different numbers? 3. What are the major components of blood? Explain the function of the blood plasma, the red blood cells, the white blood cells (in general; we will do specifics of immune system later in the year), and the platelets. 4. Describe the function of the respiratory system. Trace the path of air from the mouth to the alveoli. Then explain how the oxygen gets into the bloodstream, and continue the path of the oxygen to a cell in your big toe. Trace the path of blood through arteries, capillaries, veins, and the heart. Include where oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and wastes are picked up/dropped off utilizing the concept of diffusion. Explain the pathway of carbon dioxide waste from a cell in your big toe back to your lungs, and then out into the air. 6. Explain the process of negative pressure breathing. 7. Name the two main structures in the brain that help regulate breathing rate, and how they accomplish this. 8. Explain how hemoglobin carries oxygen, and how hemoglobin helps transport CO2 and buffer the blood.
