An Overview of the Swim Training Courses Delivered by Buckinghamshire Learning Trust ASA LICENCED TUTOR MANDY CAREY Please note all courses contain both theory and practical sessions. Fundamentals of School Swimming Formerly NCTP ASA Module 1 Certificate for Teaching School Swimming Key stages 1 & 2 This is a minimum requirement for all staff who accompany pupils to swimming lessons. Who can attend? Teachers, TA’s, LSA’s, Other Helpers Pre requisites Candidates are required to hold a current DBS certificate. Must be able to swim and be confident in/around water Fundamentals of School Swimming – Delivery Model Roles, responsibilities and relationships - Health and safety - Safeguarding and protecting children - Organisation of the learning environment - Physical Development - Developing key underpinning skills Introduction to the strokes - Swimming and water safety in the NC The course covers the Health & Safety requirements for teaching swimming, including Normal Operating Procedure (NOP), Emergency Action Plan (EAP) and Risk Assessment. It aims to provide lots of fun ideas for teaching non swimmers through to more advanced swimmers. Candidates will also be given examples of how to deliver swimming through aquatics. It gives candidates the opportunity to explore and use a wide range of resources to plan and deliver fun warm ups, Stroke Development Activities and Contrasting Activities. On this course candidates are given very useful information and resources including the ASA National Curriculum Activity Swimming cards and Learner Guide DVD Upon completion of the training candidates will receive an attendance certificate; they will be registered with the ASA and on the County database. This qualification does not have to be renewed, but expectation is that candidates will take some form of cpd even if only web based. Full certification is awarded upon completion of Aquatics Skills in School Swimming. Equipment required for courses: Swimming attire x2 & towels x2 - goggles (optional) t-shirt/shorts and/or warm clothing also for poolside when teaching Cost per person: maximum 20 delegates per course Fundamentals of School Swimming: £185 delivered in 1 day – 09:00 – 16:00 Aquatic Skills of School Swimming: £185 delivered over 2 day’s - Day 1 13:00 – 18:00 Day 2 11:00 – 16:00 Refreshments are provided on arrival, and after pool sessions however lunch is not included. Aquatic Skills of School Swimming Formerly NCTP ASA Module 2 Certificate for Teaching School Swimming Key stages 1 & 2 Aquatic Skills of School Swimming (Key Stages 1 and 2) is part of the ASA National Curriculum Training Programme and is recognised by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) and by the Professional Development Board for Physical Education. Who can attend: The Certificate for Teaching School Swimming (Key Stages 1 & 2) is open to any person working within a primary school swimming programme e.g. school teacher, classroom assistant, learning support staff, qualified swimming teachers, parent, other helpers, students involved in initial teacher training. Pre requisites: Candidates are required to hold a current DBS certificate. Must have completed the Fundamentals of School Swimming Aquatic Skills of School Swimming - Delivery Model Planning and preparing aquatic sessions - Additional skills - Key aspects of progression, attainment and assessment - Candidates teaching pupils This course consists of 9 hours contact time, dividing units 3, 4 and 5 into 3 hours per unit. The course will be delivered over 2 x 4.5 hour sessions. Assessment of the practical teaching will be required and will be of a continuous nature throughout the three units. Each unit will comprise practical teaching time – each candidate will have the opportunity to teach between 4 – 8 pupils. Summary of programme By the end of Unit 3 (3hours) candidates will have the knowledge and understanding of: What constitutes effective performance of FUNDamental skills (i.e. buoyancy and balance), aquatic breathing, submersion, rotation and orientation, streamlining and gliding on front and back; methods to bring about improvement. Additional skills appropriate to those working at this level. The use of games as an aid to learning. Planning and programming—2 x 30 minute sessions. By the end of Unit 4 (3 hours) candidates will have the knowledge and understanding of: The basic technical aspects related to the two alternating strokes. The identification of faults and causes and progressive practices to bring about improvement. Stroke analysis Planning individual lessons – 2 x 30 minute sessions By the end of Unit 5 (3 hours) candidates will have the knowledge and understanding of: The basic technical aspects related to the two simultaneous strokes. The identification of faults and causes and progressive practices to bring about improvement. Stroke analysis. Planning individual lessons – 2 x 30 min lessons Shallow Tank Rescue Training Certificate This is a requirement for all on poolside at schools own Shallow Tank pool This is a 2 hour course for schools with their own shallow pools and aims to provide a safe framework for school swimming staff and pupils ensuring all involved know what to do in emergency situations in water depth of 1.2 metres or shallower. Who can attend: Teachers LSA’s TA’s Other Helpers Pre requisites: Candidates hold a current DBS certificate and current Paediatric First Aid Certificate Candidates are given opportunities to review current procedures, including Emergency Action Plan (EAP) of the pool. This course is delivered by the BLT Swimming Consultant every 2 years. It is expected that during the interim year candidates will refresh their training together led by the swimming coordinator in school.
