CLASS TITLE:
CAREER STUDIES & SERVICES SPECIALIST TRAINING SPECIALIST
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the co-direction of the EOPS/CalWORKs Counselor/Facilitator and the Faculty Director of
The Career Studies & Services, develop Individual Training Plans (ITP’s) and educational,
experiential, and employment opportunities for students in the CalWORKs and related grant and
contract programs; serve as program advocate to area community organizations and
business/industry; assess, screen, and refer students for employment opportunities, and follow up
with employers and students to monitor compliance with contract, grant, and/or program
requirements. Coordinate and provide resources and services that assist students with
appropriate preparation for interviews and employment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
1.
Develop a network of employers for experiential and employment opportunities for
students.
2.
Conduct on-site monitoring visits with employers/site supervisors to ensure program
compliance and to monitor program participants’ progress. (E)
3.
Assist students with researching and identifying occupational interests and
requirements; develop Individual Training Plans (ITP’s); ensure compliance with grant,
social service agency, and District requirements, policies and procedures. (E)
4.
Secure and provide resources to assist students with preparing for successful
interactions with employers, such as interview attire, transportation vouchers, etc. Solicit
sponsors and donations from the community ; prepare correspondence/awards for
recognizing donors; maintain records for the related MiraCosta College Foundation
account
5.
Serve as lead coordinator for services and events in program area; support CalWORKs
and Career Center team members serving as lead; support CalWORKs and Career
Center-sponsored events through announcements, marketing, and participation.
6.
Produce articles and advertisements for department newsletter, campus newspaper,
multi-media flat screens, and department web pages as directed or requested. Prepare
and disseminate Career Center, CalWORKs, and program informational and
promotional articles and materials for services and events using a variety of media;
ensure up-to-date program information on the Web and all marketing outlets.

Assess students’ workplace readiness; discuss and model positive work skills and habits;
assist students with exploring career interests and occupational choices; develop and
teach workshops and classroom presentations in person and/or online as needed or
requested; refer students to appropriate workshops, placements, and/or campus or
community resources; assist students with preparing and editing career-related
documents. (E)

Plan and execute recruitment strategies for enrolling program participants; develop and
program orientations regarding program participants’ rights and responsibilities. (E)

Occasionally negotiate, develop, execute and monitor subcontracts with employers for onthe-job (OTJ) opportunities in accordance with MOU contract guidelines and MiraCosta
program specifications; responsible for accuracy of detailed information on completed
contracts. Conduct on-site monitoring visits with students and employers at OJT work
sites. (E)

Establish and maintain detailed and comprehensive files and records on each program
participant; maintain accurate and up-to-date records required by Department of Labor,
contractors, grantors, relevant social service agencies, and by the District; compile and
report placement, demographic, outcome, and other data regarding services provided and
populations served.
11.
Maintain ongoing communication and a mutually satisfactory referral process with the
County Welfare Department (Health and Human Services) regarding program
participants’ progress and employment. Ensure that regularly updated Memoranda of
Understanding (MOU) for WEX assignments are on file. (E)

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and experience equivalent to Associate in Arts degree in Education, Business,
Psychology, Social Work or related field and one year of closely related work experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver license.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Primarily sedentary with intermittent standing, walking, bending and/or stooping; occasional

keyboard, mouse or other control devices; ability to travel to a variety of locations on and off
campus as-needed to conduct district business.
