There is the Peninsular Tunnel, which was dug in 1864; also, a water race, open cut mining and sluicing are still evident. All on track. Total ascending/descending 350m, steep in parts. We walk through coastal tea-tree, a cliff top track and to the surf of Bushrangers Bay. A walk through Greens Bush with coastal heathland, pastures and views of the sea, with the promise of kangaroos brings us to the close of the walk. There will need to be a car shuffle. Note: this is an EM walk graded to M because of the distance CATHEDRAL RANGE – NORTHERN CIRCUIT Sun 1 Dec MH Walk area: Acheron Valley, near Buxton 116 km Distance/direction from Melbourne: Roger 13.4 km Max walkers 15 Walking distance: X Overdue Walks Procedure Yes No Starting from Neds Gully car park, the walk will take an anticlockwise route, mainly on tracks. From the car park, the track climbs steadily to Neds Saddle. After a side trip to Neds Peak (765m), the route heads north to Little Cathedral (745m), affording great views over the valley. The route then heads south for 3km, crossing the highest point on the ridge, The Cathedral (845m). After that, it’s pretty well downhill all the way to Cooks Mill and then along the Little River back to the car park. After a 7.30 AM start from Melbourne, we turn off the Mansfield/Buller Road at Merrijig (a break at the pub), drive 60 kms into the hills past Mt Timbertop (Geelong Grammar fame), across the Howqua River at Sheepyard Flat, up a rugged climb to 8 Mile Gap, past the Bluff Hut/The Bluff to camp. Some of the mountain road is not suitable for 2WD but passable by Forester. We will do trips onto The Bluff (1726 meters), the iconic Hell’s Window/Mt Magdala and the spectacular Eagle’s Peaks plus plenty else in between. This an alpine environment so take appropriate gear. The line has always been a bit overgrown and its present state unknown. I plan to explore the furthest part of the line also, which has been very overgrown for years, so thick scrub will be part of the walk with gaiters recommended. There is also an off-track section. The forest is typical Mountain Ash country and magnificent to walk in. On the first night, we’ll camp near the Vic/NSW border , then at the most convenient places in the Kosciuszko NP. Starting from the car park, we follow part of the Surf Coast walk to the track down to the Jarosite (Red ochre) mine site. Then we follow some of the Aboriginal Heritage Walk to Pt Addis itself, averting the gaze if the Optional Clothing beach is busy, or joining in if the weather’s hot. From Pt Addis, we make a circuit to Anglesea along the beach and on the track on top of the cliffs, past Eumeralla Scout camp. Tides dictate which way we travel. We will leave a car at Pt Addis to avoid the climb back up the hill. There are various options to shorten the walk, including leaving a car at Anglesea. This walk covers some club history as the Boroondara track is named for the work our club members did over the summer of 1991 – 92 clearing the track and building the original steps beside the Wilhelmina Falls. The route is all on formed tracks with the path rocky and steep in places and a 320m climb. It is classed medium as there is a one-hour hill climb to begin with, but the descents are more gradual. It should be a pleasant walk through wet and Dry forest areas with numerous views across the Yarra Valley. This is a circuit walk. Our first project will possibly be track clearing (lopper work) on the southern ridgeline between the Farmyard and Mt Sugarloaf. Parks Victoria will provide training, tools and gloves and will cover us against accidents under their volunteers insurance. We will work on the Saturday and walk on the Sunday. We will have a basecamp (tents) on Saturday night (BYO water) and do two bushwalks on Sunday – a MH and an EM. Come for the 2 days, the work day only or for the Sunday only. We walk through tall ironbark trees and past curious grasstrees together with silver banksias, correas and white daisy. We walk up the Point Addis Road to the carpark and see the view from here, and then on to Black Bluff for lunch. There will need to be a car shuffle. The walk is on tracks, some well formed, others more uneven and steep in parts. Below Cora Lynn Cascades the track is rocky and a little difficult at times. The track into the Canyon is scrambly and narrow, but becomes a formed track after that first part. Although autumn is not necessarily the best time to visit waterfalls, there could be a fair flow over them. Much of the walk is in creek valleys, so damp green conditions should be expected. Option to camp previous night. Sun 6 April A WALK THROUGH HISTORY: COLIBAN MAIN CHANEL Walk area: Taradale Distance/direction from Melbourne: EM Marian 15km Max walkers 15 Walking distance: Overdue Walks Procedure Yes No x 111km NW In 1864 the brilliant engineer Joseph Brady, who had built reservoirs, bridges and harbours throughout Australia won a prize for designing the best scheme for supplying water to Bendigo and Castlemaine. It involved channels, tunnels, syphons and aquaducts following the high ridge line from the Upper Coliban River. It was finally opened in 1877 and has flowed continuously ever since. Incl visit to Trentham Falls, drive following the upper reaches of the Coliban River and historic Railway viaduct as well as an interperative walk along a pretty section of the channel between Malmsbury and Taradale. Opposite is Lake Lorne where black swans, swamp hens, wood ducks and other birds abound. From Drysdale to Queenscliff, the trail runs beside the tourist railway. Alongside the tourist railway are remnant strands of sheoaks and other indigenous vegetation. The walk takes in views of farms nestling in the Ranges, the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross, Camels Hump and views to the Melbourne Skyline on the horizon we return via Orde Hill reservoir, which avoids doing a steep descent from Mt. This walk is part 1 of that trail, aiming to cover 66km from Parachilna Gorge to Wilpena Pound and a further 56 km on to Hawker. This passes through the heart of the Flinders Ranges NP. It is also the most remote section of the walk and food/water drops may be required. Expressions of Interest are sought both from those interested in the pack carry and those interested in providing vehicular support while undertaking associated day walks. The walk will commence with a climb onto Mt Sonder at the western end of the trail. The trail then heads east towards Alice Springs alternating between high rocky ridges, creek beds, plains and gorges. Where possible we will do day walks with car shuffles and base camps. However there will be some overnight walks when it will be necessary to carry water. 8
