Centre for Distance Education International Fellowships 2012:
Call for applications
The Centre for Distance Education is opening up its Fellowship scheme for individuals from international
Independent Teaching Institutions with expertise in open and distance education, technology enhanced
learning (TEL), and related areas.
The Centre provides a focus for professional development and scholarly activity in flexible and distributed
learning across the University of London. It works through a dynamic community of practice which supports
intercollegiate collaboration and knowledge-sharing to influence policy and practice in the field of open and
distance learning and develop good practices across the UoL International Programmes and beyond.
The Centre for Distance Education Fellowship Scheme is central to this community. Working individually,
together and with others in the Centre’s wider network, the Fellows provide core expertise and specialist
support that underpins the work of the CDE, making strategy and policy proposals and developing the
Centre’s services and expanding knowledge-base.
APPLYING
Applications to join the first batch of CDE international Fellows are now being accepted. The closing date
for applications is 30 June 2012.
Please use the attached form to supply personal details, approval of your Head of Department (where
possible) and a statement of not more than 500 words summarising:
o the attributes that you would bring to the Centre
o how you can act as a conduit to, and for your colleagues, with respect to good practice in
distance education
o any areas of specialist knowledge or expertise where you could lead or contribute to the
overall work of the Centre
Please also attach a current résumé that illustrates the relevant expertise and experience you can
offer; and two statements of support from a proposer and seconder, one of whom can be the person
approving your application.

PARTICIPANTS
International Fellowships are open to staff of teaching Institutions of the University of London International
Programmes who have made a significant contribution through publication and/or practice to research and
pedagogy in open and distributed learning, and technology enhanced learning. This may include Programme
Directors and members of programme teams, as well as specialists involved in student support, learning
technology, instructional design and the development of learning and teaching.

BENEFITS
Fellows can use the title of CDE International Fellow and represent the Centre as described under
‘responsibilities’ below. They can propose development projects and participate in research projects
coordinated and funded by the Centre. Fellows can claim up to £1,000 GBP per year to cover their costs of
participating in the activities of the Centre including those covering travel and subsistence, approved
equipment or other costs related to research and seminars conducted on our behalf.
As a recognised group of experts within the University of London International Programmes, Fellows are
eligible to undertake additional paid work on Centre projects or consultancy contracts for the University.
Where Fellows are employed as consultants or on projects prevailing rates will be paid.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Fellows provide advocacy and support and a focal point for CDE activities and services. They contribute to
policy development and direct the services and activities of the Centre. In all of their work, Fellows are able
to draw on the resources of the Centre, including coordination and support from central staff and specialist
assistance from other Fellows and Centre consultants.
International Fellows are expected to participate in Fellowship meetings remotely (where possible),
which normally take place three times a year, and to play a role in organising and contributing to annual
Centre conferences.
The Centre will seek to ensure that Fellows represent a broad spectrum of teaching institutions, regions
and professional specialisms.
FELLOWSHIP MEETINGS
The Fellowship provides a development forum for the Centre and meets at least once a term. Its
business includes:
o identifying priorities for development and service provision to support the work of distance
education practitioners throughout the University of London.
o discussing and developing policy recommendations in relation to teaching, learning and
research in distance education
o considering proposals and issues referred to it by the Centre’s steering group or from members
of the Fellowship
o recommending activities for the Centre for Distance Education
The membership comprises the Fellows, with staff directly engaged in the work of the Centre. Others
may be co-opted to join the meeting as necessary.
