service users and external IT providers
BACKGROUND:
The IT Department has undergone a radical transformation. IT now
executes a mixture of on-premise, Cloud and 3rd party sourced IT
services, in a an entirely new and modern IT infrastructure that utilises
the latest technologies. The IT function serves 600 staff in NCIs and NCIs
co-located bodies and aims to adopt common solutions across NCIs
where practical. IT provides a broad range of customer focused IT
services such as technical architecture and support, networks, change
management, business analysis, project management, Training,
Procurement, systems administration and applications hosting requiring
a range of sophisticated and innovative skills.
JOB SUMMARY:
To manage and maintain a range of databases supported by NCIs IT,
generate BI reports, provide consultancy support for others hosted on
NCIs platform, troubleshoot and resolve incidents and work with IT
colleagues, NCIs staff, 3rd parties and projects to implement relational
databases and BI solutions correctly and determine and support the best
methods of organising, recording, reporting on and migrating data to
new and existing databases.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:











Take care of NCIs database systems and ensure maintenance procedures, IT security controls,
documentation, operating manuals and disaster recovery plans are in place
Appraise web development requests and proposals and manage NCIs web registrar and hosting
contracts and oversee those not yet consolidated into NCIs contracts
Provide input to the strategic architecture ensuring collaboration with the business areas
Resolve and fulfil database incidents, problems, change requests, backups and restores in a
customer focused manner and within service level agreements
Monitor database efficiency and design and provide performance reports for management
Escalate and inform the lead technical architect of all major DBA initiatives, projects and
major outages
Provide technical database knowledge to impact assessment activities, IT colleagues and
projects and ensure delivery of business requirements and alignment with the IT architecture
Manage databases, keys and indexes, add, rename, drop and edit tables, establish connections
to multiple databases, create and execute queries and alter stored procedures and views
Support database design and set up and testing of new database and data handling systems
Write advanced SQL code and create complex query definitions that allow data to be extracted
and reported and generate reports where appropriate
Work with IT colleagues and NCIS staff and ensure compliance with data security and data

Essential
Education:
 Degree in computer science, Information Technology or similar subject
 Certification or significant experience in SQL 2008/2005 and MySQL
Skills/Aptitudes:
 Relational Database management
 Proficiency in SQL server 2005, 2008 and 2012
 Report writing & data analysis
 Data Compliance & Protection
 Ability to effectively problem solve and identify ways to mitigate incidents
 Demonstrative project management
 Strong written and verbal communication skills
 Ability to work under pressure, on own initiative and to deadlines
Knowledge/Experience:
 Significant experience in a database administration or 3rd line support role
 High Level of database knowledge to address a range of issues and assist IT colleagues with
queries
 Database and Data structure knowledge
 Experience in using remote management systems
 Running Queries to extract information from Databases
 Familiarity with computer operating systems, database technology (design, software and
structure and managing database Software
 Understanding and managing Web hosting platforms and web analytics and insight tools and
provision

Circumstances:
The role is based in Westminster and requires working at Lambeth Palace or Bermondsey with

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Starting Salary:
£46,000 per annum
Pension Contributions:
Non-clergy staff will be admitted to the Church Administrators Pension
Fund (CAPF, DC Section). Clergy already in the Church of England Funded
Pensions Scheme (CEFPS) will have the option of either remaining in this
scheme or joining the CAPF scheme.
There is no contracting – out certificate under the Pension Schemes Act
1993 in force for this employment in relation to the CAPF and CEFPS.
Both CAPF and CEFPS members are contracted-in to the State Second
Pension.

Hours of Duty:
Normal hours of work are 35 per week, Monday to Friday with an hour’s
unpaid break for lunch.
Annual Leave:
25 days paid leave per leave year. This is exclusive of public holidays and
additional holidays approved by your employer.
Season Ticket Loan:
Staff are eligible to apply for an interest-free travel season ticket loan for
their journey to and from work.
Contract:
The post is offered on an open-ended contract, subject to a six month
probationary period.
