NURSING DIAGNOSIS
2. Risk for activity intolerance related to
exacerbation of symptoms associated with
exercise-induced bronchospasm.
3. Risk for noncompliance with treatment
regimen associated with knowledge deficit
about asthma.
STUDENT GOALS
1. Student will participate fully in normal
school and day-care activities, including
sports and exercise.
1. The student will increase their
understanding of the link between
adherence to the asthma management
plan and a decreased risk of long-term
harm to airways.
2. The student will increase their
awareness of factors that both promote
and interfere with compliance with asthma
treatment and strategies to help manage
barriers to compliance.
PLAN OF ACTION
BY WHOM/WHEN
1. Assist teachers to plan for
accommodations as needed including:
 Use of inhaler and warm-up
activities before exercise
 Adapting PE activities during asthma
episodes, during recovery from
exacerbations, or upper respiratory
tract infections, on days when
allergens are severe, or for adverse
weather considerations (e.g.
extremely cold or windy days)
 Making up school work missed
during exacerbations.
1. Educate student about asthma and self
management and about importance of
adherence to asthma management plans
to avoid exacerbations and possible longterm harm to airways.
School Nurse, staff, office personnel ongoing
2. Assist student to identify motivators for
self-care activities and factors that might
interfere with compliance (e.g. side effects
of medication, peer pressure).
School Nurse/Counselor – ongoing
Classroom teacher as needed.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
Student participates in developing a plan
for asthma care at school, including the
use of inhaler before exercise (if ordered),
adapting physical education activities due
to exacerbations, upper respiratory
infections, severe allergy days, weather;
field trips; and making up school work due
to asthma episodes.
Student actively participates in physical
activities at school, with modifications
made as needed.
School Nurse
Student will demonstrate a good
attendance pattern.
Student identifies at least 3 factors that
foster compliance with asthma self-care
plans.
Student identifies 3 factors that might
interfere with compliance with asthma
self-care plans.
