Description: Welsch will discuss the path that has led him around the world, around the country as the Vagabond Chef in 2013, then back to West Virginia to open his first restaurant, Vagabond Kitchen. The Kitchen’s mission statement is “Handcrafted food rooted in local community,” and discussions of how important community is to local economy, how his business seeks to be a part of their community, and their plans to build the community in and around Wheeling. Presenters Background: Graduated Cum Laude from West Liberty University in 2002, Welsch has traveled the world exploring and learning. He now brings those experiences home showcasing them in his restaurant, Vagabond Kitchen, in beautiful downtown Wheeling. 102 Films with Art, Art Barbeau Ph.D 8 sessions: Wednesday October 7, 14, 21, 28 9:30-11:30 a.m. & November 4, 11, 18 & December 2 9:30-11:30 a.m. Description: If you ask film buffs which director was the all-time master of mystery and suspense, it is likely that a majority will name Alfred Hitchcock. Hitchcock’s skills were such that you were on the edge of your seat to the end of a film that was absurd in its premise. Here’s a chance to watch and talk about some of these. Art has picked them carefully, they might include one or two you haven’t seen before. Presenter’s Background: Art Barbeau is Professor Emeritus at West Liberty University where he taught history and anthropology for 43 years. This is the 7th film course Art has presented at the Community University. 103 The Missing Key to Wellness, Brennan Huls, Ph.D, Chiropractor Two Sessions: October 8 & October 22 10:00-11:00 a.m. Description: In this 1 hour workshop, we will talk about the most important piece of the wellness puzzle that is missing for most people and the devastating impact that not knowing is having on our collective health potential. We will also discuss how you can take control of your health and your life starting today! Presenter’s Background: Dr. Brennan Huls is a pediatric and family wellness Chiropractor with a thriving practice in Wheeling. 104 “Who Do You Think You Are?” History of Psychological Personality Assessment, Tifani Fletcher Friday October 9 1:30-3:30p.m. Description: Learn about the History of Psychological Personality Assessment. This will include topics from Aristotle, WWII, and present day personality testing. You will have the opportunity to participate in several personality assessments, including creating your own “inkblot” drawing. This is a new offering. Presenters Background: Tifani Fletcher received her Ph.D. in Psychology, with a focus on translational science, from East Tennessee State University. She is new to the Wheeling area, having lived across the US as a military “brat”. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at WLU. 105 Wheeling’s Unsung Heroes and Heroines’, Jeanne Finstein and Judy Hendrickson October 15 10:00- 11:30 a.m. Description: Wheeling’s Past is filled with outstanding citizens who made their mark on the city. This presentation will be on a few of those who have been largely forgotten. Presenter’s Background: Jeanne Finstein and Judi Hendrickson are amateur historians who enjoy discovering and sharing interesting pieces of history, particularly Wheeling history. They are the authors of a book on local history, “Walking Pleasant Valley,” and are long-time, active members of the historic preservation organization, Friends of Wheeling. 106 Wealth Management Series, Joe & Sandy Bell, Financial Advisors 4 sessions Wednesdays October 28 1:30 p.m. and November 11, 18 1:30p.m. & December 2nd 1:30p.m. Description: Session 1: Make the Most of Your Social Security Benefits - What you need to know to make informed decisions. Presenters Background: Mr. & Mrs. Bell have almost 50 years of combined experience as financial professionals. They formed BJS Wealth Management in 2014 they then joined Janney Montgomery Scott, LLC. Joe Bell attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY and graduated from Albright College in Reading, PA with a degree in Economics. Sandy Bell graduated from Western Kentucky University. They both have served as officers and board members on numerous boards in the area. The two have recently moved back from Georgia and are glad to be back in The Mid-Ohio Valley. 107 Wheeling Mobsters, Steve Novotney, Weelunk Writer and Radio Personality for WKKX October 29 9:30-11:30 a.m. Description: If you are curious about all of those rumors and tales you have heard through the years of the Wheeling Mob, the back-room deals, the hijacked tractor-trailers, the drug distribution, and the green doors, this is a course you don’t want to miss. Some of you unknowingly could have been a part of Wheeling’s most sinister history. Presenters Background: Steve Novotney is a writer for Weelunk keeping the community informed on all current events through print journalism on past and present “happenings”. Steve is also a radio personality for AM 1600 WKKX. Novotney consistently uncovers breaking news stories and concentrates on the citizen's stake in local, state and national government. A veteran of both the radio and print journalism, Novotney has turned the Ohio Valley's attention away from national syndication and to local topics. His news coverage, interviews, and opinions stir a lot of attention on a daily basis while offering the people of both East Ohio and West Virginia's northern panhandle an opportunity to be heard. 108 Chair Yoga and Simple Meditation, Lindsay Schooler Wednesday November 4 1:30p.m. Description: All the physical and mental benefits of yoga, without a mat! Learn simple poses that can be done seated or standing to build strength in spinal stabilizing muscles and release tension from tight spots. Incorporating mindfulness and breath work into the practice to receive the neurological benefits of simple meditation. Presenters Background: Lindsay Schooler is the owner of Happy Goat Yoga in Wheeling, WV and has taught yoga at WLU since 2010. Lindsay took her first yoga class as a student at WLU, where she graduated in 2004 and went on to yoga teacher training in Charleston, WV. 109 Flat Boats of the Ohio River, Steve Nixon Wednesday November 11 1-3p.m. Description: This lecture is about early navigation, particularly flatboats, along the Ohio River Valley. How the waterways themselves have evolved to become what they are and how their characteristics influenced practical boat design for emigration and transportation of goods. What were the social, economic and cultural conditions that drove settlers west through the Ohio Valley and the difficulties that were encountered during river travel. After the advent of steam boats, the attempts to improve year-round navigation by changing the river itself. Presenter’s Background: Steve Nixon Wellsburg, WV, graduated from WLU and E6CC. Steve is a 30 year steelworker with Wheeling Nisshin and a 39 year Lay-Minister Community of Christ. His passion is local history especially the Ohio River Valley. He is currently writing a book on the flatboats of the Ohio River. 110 Russia: Legitimate Threat or Newfound Boogieman?, Leonard Rinchiuso West Liberty Foreign Language Faculty Thursday November 12 3p.m. Description: Russia has been identified by various pundits, ranging from U.S. military advisers to syndicated columnists, as the greatest global threat to the United States. Recent events in Ukraine and in Syria seem to support such claims. Is such a perception truth or anti-Russian hysteria? In this course, recent global events will be reexamined in an effort to answer the question: is Russia a true global threat or just the latest object in the search for a political enemy? Presenter's background: Leonard Rinchiuso is an Assistant Professor of Modern Languages at WLU and an avid student of Russian and Eastern European geopolitics/history. He has taught language courses in Russian at WLU and most recently visited Eastern Europe in 2008. 111 A Beginners Guide to Selling on Ebay, Jim Clark Wednesday, November 18 2-3p.m. Description: Have you maybe thought about selling on eBay but weren't sure how to get started? Were you maybe overwhelmed when you read or heard how to list? Don't be!!!! This brief introduction will help all beginners and first time sellers get over their fear of selling and on their way to becoming a star seller. Presenter’s Background: Jim Clark is WLU's Chief Technology Officer providing professional leadership for the university's information technology (IT) department to include IT Services, voice services, data networks, data security, the Student Information System (Ellucian Banner) and the Learning Management System (Sakai). Leads the development and implementation of a technology component of the Institutional Master Plan that supports the University's strategic direction. 112 Diabetes Discussion with Marie DuToit Thursday November 12, 9:30-11:30 Description: This course will include a brief description of what Diabetes is, and how to prevent and manage it on National Diabetes World Diabetes Day. Presenters Background: Marie du Toit holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, as well as a Master’s Degree in Critical Care Nursing from the University of the Free State, South Africa. She has 11 years of experience in the Critical Care arena and Mrs du Toit LOVES to teach. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at West Liberty University. Prior to working in higher education, Mrs du Toit spent 5 years as a Diabetes Educator, working with people with all types of Diabetes 113 Healthy Eating for the Holidays, Kathleen O’Connor Thursday November 19 1:00-3:00 Description: Tips on healthy eating for the holiday season. Learn how to enjoy holiday meals without putting on the extra pounds. Eating smarter at parties will also be discussed along healthy recipe substitutions. Presenter’s Background: Kathleen O'Connor is a WLU graduate and is the owner of MOVER’CISE. She is also a current graduate student in the Master of Professional Studies in Organizational Leadership at the Highlands Center.
