Induction Marathon
PRE ENTRY
check accommodation details - if in halls sort out content insurance
check arrival requirements
log onto the Hertfordshire Students’ Union web site and check fresher's events and "House" activities
check joining information via UH website ( as identified within your acceptance letter)
read joining instructions handbook
find out where your first course session is
find and print out a campus map
find park and ride if appropriate
check UNO bus timetables/train times if necessary
open a student bank account
have a look for any relevant Facebook sites and/or twitter feeds relevant to your course and/or accommodation
find opening times for relevant services (E.g. Nursery and the Forum)
FIRST DAY
identify rooms for your first day on a campus map
introduce yourself to the first people you meet (either in Hall and/or in your first class)
familiarise yourself with the schedule for the first week
identify the aims of your programme of study - remember why you are here
share your thoughts, and expectations of the course with an immediate peer - someone you've met today
explore your academic area - labs, tutor offices, hand in desk/reception seminar rooms etc.
find the Forum and Hertfordshire Students’ Union familiarise yourself with the facilities
phone home
collect a UH wrist band
collect a UH Student Planner/Diary

END OF FIRST WEEK
attend all the induction sessions
introduce yourself to your tutors
find the Student Charter and the University mission statement
explore the LRC and know how to take books out and to print
If relevant, register with the doctor (medical centre)
ensure you have and read the module guides for your current modules - know where they need to be during the next week
attend the sports fair and the fresher's fair
identify the date and mechanism of submission for your first assignment and the requirements of the assignment
know the name of your personal tutor or an Academic skills advisor
know the name of your year tutor
identify the Student Centre and be aware of the services they provide
Familiarise yourself with the Graduate Attributes
END OF WEEK 2
attend your enrolment session as scheduled (could have been in week 1) and get your id card
identify specialist subject equipment/kit that you need to buy/collect
find out from your tutors which key textbooks are essential but before purchasing, check if in the LRC or if Voyager has an e-book version
be familiar with the student A-Z and be aware of relevant services and personal responsibilities as defined by the student code of conduct
find out the role of the student rep and consider if you would like to become one
be familiar with StudyNet
be familiar with the student attendance 'check in' system
know the dates of the terms and exams
ensure you have read your programme handbook

END OF FIRST MONTH
take the opportunity to work with, and learn from, a peer from a different culture
put all the assignment hand in dates in your diary for at least semester A
be certain that you are up to date with your academic studies
if you struggling with your studies speak to a member of staff - e.g. personal tutor/year tutor/programme tutor/academic skills tutor
understand how coursework is returned and what to do with the feedback provided
work through the resources and activities available within i-SPY on Student
find out the structural organisation of your school
Find all the Graduate Attribute artworks on both campuses
go to an event at the Forum
take a trip on UNO perhaps to St Albans or other local towns
Visit the Herts SU Student Jobs if you would like a part time job
END OF FIRST SEMESTER
know how to find your exam results
visit Careers and Placement Services and enquire about work experience/placement opportunities and CV writing
When available, complete your diary with your timetable and assignment deadlines for semester B
Ensure you've met with your personal tutor or academic skills tutor
take a trip to London
Consider involvement in a Hertfordshire Students’ Union Society or a volunteering opportunity
Begin planning your housing for the next academic year (e.g. visit Herts SU Student Housing).
