JOURNAL ARTICLES:
Scholarly vs. Popular
Scholarly literature includes journal articles that have been written by scholars for other scholars.
Peer-reviewed literature is a sub-group of scholarly literature, and is reviewed by other experts in the
field before publication. This information is more academic and reliable than something that would
appear in a popular magazine such as Time or Newsweek. When doing research for an academic
paper, it is generally preferred that students refer to scholarly information. Your professor will discuss
the specifics of your assignment.
Many databases give you the option to retrieve only scholarly journal articles when doing searches.
Look for that option on the search screen.
When looking for information on a topic, journal articles found in our databases can be very helpful.
Although the databases are accessed electronically, they are different than websites.
