Connecting - Anchor Standard 11: Relate artistic ideas and works with societal, cultural, and historical context to deepen understanding

I was surprised at how many of you chosen art from Europe and the distant past for your recent homework. Only a few

Studio 1 students chose art made in the last 20 years. I was also surprised that there was no Chinese art chosen at all.

I think it is important that you are knowledgeable about the history of art, but also that you know about contemporary art.

So we will be looking together at art from different periods and places so you gain an idea about our shared human creative history.

I will also be asking you to find out about other artists work and present back to the class about these.

The first task for this will be about Chinese contemporary art. You will work in pairs. You will make a powerpoint of no more than 8 slides about the artist you are given. You will be given a list of things you must find out about the artist.

The “Rules” are:-

Each person in your team must speak.

You MUST NOT just read the slides

–the slides should be for us to look at whilst you tell us about the artist and their work.

You must include information about where they live and work, what they make and what materials and techniques they use, and most importantly what their work is about.

 You may also include information about their biography but it should not be a boring “ they were born in Shanghai in 1982 and then when they were 3 they moved to Bejing and then………” If there is something INTERESTING that impacts their work then tell us.

You might choose one of their works and go into more detail about it. Think of the Yue Minjun example I showed you.

You MUST cite all sources!!!!! Every time you use and image or quote. You may have the last slide be a bibliography.

I will grade your presentation against the rubric below. Each person will receive a grade so make sure you contribute to the making of the presentation and presenting it.
