Maths Investigation Week – Year 5 This week you have done three different maths investigations or activities. 1. 2. 3. All the fours Visual Numbers Paper folding I would like you to choose one of the activities and, in your homework books, explain what you did. Give examples and/or colour in the shapes and patterns. You can glue anything you do into your book if you need to. Your work will be used as examples in our class investigation book. Below are some resources: 1. All the fours Try to make every number from 1 to 20 using only four 4’s and any operation. You can include brackets and square and square root signs too. 2. Visual Numbers Write the number above each representation. What do you see? Use colours to show patterns. 3. Paper folding Construct a square with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. Convince your partner that it is a square and has ¼ of the area. Construct a triangle with exactly ¼ the area of the original square. Convince your partner that it has ¼ of the area. Construct another triangle, also with ¼ the area, that is not congruent to the first one you constructed. Convince your partner that it has ¼ of the area. Construct a square with exactly ½ the area of the original square. Convince your partner that it is a square and has ½ of the area. Construct another square, also with ½ the area, that is oriented differently from the one you constructed in 4. Convince your partner that it has ½ of the area.
