NAC STUDENT TUTOR EMPLOYMENT PROCEDURES

ELIGIBILITY

In order to work in the NAC tutoring role, you must have at least a 2.75 GPA, have achieved a 3.0 or higher in the course you are tutoring in, and/or be recommended by your instructor in that course. You must possess a strong understanding of the purpose and conventions of the subject specific skills to be able to provide effective assistance to students across the academic spectrum. In addition, you should:

Be enthusiastic about course work and learning

Be friendly and empathetic

Be reliable

Be able to focus on the learning needs of others while you are tutoring

MOST IMPORTANT----BE PATIENT with your tutees!

Subjects you find

“easy” may be extremely challenging to others. Everyone has a different way of thinking and understanding. You must be able to explain subject matter in a couple different ways depending on their learning style.

If you are not CRLA certified, you must attend a mandatory tutor training:

TUTOR ORIENTATION: Saturday, Sept 11, 8:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

DISABILITY TRAINING: Tuesday, Sept 21 , 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

DIVERSITY TRAINING: Tuesday, Oct 5 , 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

You will be paid for these trainings . Upon completion you will receive College

Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) certification.

COMPENSATION

You have the option to receive pay or academic credit for your work in the NAC

Tutoring Center.

The pay scale is as follows: $8.00 starting pay

$8.25 2 nd semester

$.25 increase when CRLA certified

$.25 increase per semester up to $8.75

$9.00 CRLA II certified up to $9.75

To be paid for your time, once the Tutor Coordinator has completed a Contract

Authorization and Request Form (CARF) for you, you need to sign the CARF and complete and I-9 form at the Financial Aid Office in 101 Miller Student Center.

You will need a passport or two forms of identification such as a driver’s license, social security card, or birth certificate. You must get your Student Intake Form to the

Tutor Coordinator by the end of the workday on the 28 th of the month and enter

your hours on WebOpus. If the Tutor Coordinator does not have your intake forms before the 29 th , you will not be paid during the following month.

Instead of pay you may receive alternate course credits towards completion of your degree. To receive academic credit you must tutor 50 hours a semester for each credit,

100 hours for two credits, etc.

SCHEDULING

Your first tutoring appointment with a student will be scheduled by the Tutor

Coordinator, who will contact you to notify you of the appointment time. (The exception to this is a “walk-up” student who needs tutor help immediately and, whom you help after completing the Student Intake Process with the student). Please notify the Tutor coordinator of such cases. After your first session, you and your tutee will then exchange contact information (cell phone, e-mail) in order for each of you to be able to contact the other. Tutees have a responsibility to contact their tutor if arrangements change (“late” or

“missed appointments”, or “need to reschedule”) so that tutors are not spending time waiting for tutees who don’t show up.

After your first tutoring session with a student, subsequent sessions will be set up by agreement between tutor and tutee. If you cannot meet the needs of a student, in terms of timing or the tutoring process itself, please notify the Tutor Coordinator.

If a tutee is not at the scheduled place on time for an appointment, try to contact them if possible, and wait at least 10 minutes for them to show.

WALK-IN TUTORING

Walk-in tutoring is available if you choose to hold “office hours” as well as take one-onone appointments. There will also be walk-in tutoring in the week before mid-terms and before finals. The Tutor Coordinator will work with the tutors to create a schedule for these times.

TUTOR DEVELOPMENT

In addition to attending the mandatory Tutor Trainings listed above, you are expected to meet with the Tutor Coordinator and other NAC tutors bi-weekly in support of your growth and effectiveness in your tutoring work. The Tutor coordinator will also make periodic courtesy calls to both tutors and tutee to keep abreast of the tutoring status and progress.

Keep in mind your own course load and academic success as you accept tutoring assignments. Please do your best to accommodate tutees schedules. Remind your tutees to bring their books, syllabus, course assignments, and/or other relevant material to your

sessions. If there is ever a question about the NAC Tutoring Program that you can’t answer, please contact the Tutor Coordinator by e-mail or phone.

Thank you for serving your fellow students as a tutor.
