Discipline by shareholders manifests itself through monitoring banks' level of risk as well as through influencing banks' management actions. We find that shareholders utilize the relation between stock returns and different types of risk measures to monitor risky banks. Shareholders partially influence bank management by responding to decreasing stock returns with a demand to improve loan quality. Moreover, the influence on management in small banks is more pronounced compared to large banks. This is a powerful methodology of modern Operational Research for framing, analyzing, and discussing complex issues and problems. System dynamics modeling is often the background of a systemic thinking approach and has become a management and organizational development paradigm. This paper proposes a system dynamics model for studying the factors that impact the academic performance of 1st to 8th grade primary school students residing in poor migrant neighborhoods. The data used in the model are based upon the perception of teachers who are the subjects of a survey conducted in public schools located mainly in the inner squatter and outer squatter districts of Turkish cities. Squatter districts are subjected to large shifts of population as a result of interregional and urban-rural migration, and they pose educational, social and behavioral challenges. The system dynamics model proposed here builds up relationships between variables that affect academic performance of migrant students. The goal of the model is to identify best government policies that might improve the system state in the minimum time span. System simulation results show that the government should implement policies that target many aspects of the system concurrently in order to improve student academic quality. (c) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Data was collected from 128 women who had urinary incontinence using the following instruments: the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale, the Broome Pelvic Muscle Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form, and the Beck Depression Inventory. The validity of the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale was investigated using confirmatory factor analysis and convergent and divergent validity analyses. The reliability of the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale was examined in terms of internal consistency and testretest correlations. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a three - factor model that had acceptable goodness-of-fit indices. The convergent validity of the Continence SelfEfficacy Scale was supported by a positive correlation between the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale and the Broome Pelvic Muscle Exercise Self-Efficacy Scale. The divergent validity of the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale was supported by negative relationships between the Continence Self-Efficacy Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory. The Cronbach's alpha values regarding internal consistency were 0.94 for the overall scale and 0.920.93 for the subscales. Testretest correlations were 0.75 for the overall scale and 0.520.74 for the subscales. The Continence Self-Efficacy Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for use in Turkish women with urinary incontinence. To this end, the gravity model was estimated through fixed effects model and panel cointegration analysis. It was found that the explanatory power of the latter has superseded the former one. For the case of EU, it was found that the intra-union trade-creation effect is approximately six times larger than extra-union effects. In NAFTA, exports to outside countries are significantly diverted. For MERCOSUR, on the other hand, results indicate that the integration has not contributed to intra-union trade. The members are still significantly dependent on extra-union imports, just like the members of AFTA. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. All crime categories are related to police outlays, police numbers, unemployment, divorce and urbanization rates. Bounds testing approach to cointegration is implemented to test the existence of a long-run relationship amongst the variables. Cointegration analysis yields that the main deterrent effect on crime is the police presence and this factor is further confirmed by the real police outlays. As for the essential cause of crime, urbanization stands as the leading factor which is followed by divorce and unemployment rates. Policy implications are discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Aim To investigate amount of weight loss among Caesarean delivered babies with exclusive breastfeeding and to identify role of relative weight change (RWC) in early postnatal period on the growth of infants in subsequent months. Methods We studied healthy infants born =36 completed weeks, by Caesarean section between September 2008 and August 2009, with Apgar scores >7. Weight measurements were performed at birth, at 24 h postpartum and at days 2, 4, 7, 14, 30 and monthly up to 6 months. Predictive roles of RWC at each assessment on detecting excessive weight loss and poor weight gain in 1st month, as well as bodyweight z scores in subsequent months were assessed. Results We studied 160 infants (88 female, 72 male) with a mean gestational age of 38.01 +/- 1 weeks and birthweight of 3239 +/- 421 g. Overall, 22.5% of infants lost >10% of birthweight; 11.9% at day 2, 16.9% at day 4 and 6.6% at day 7. Degree of weight loss was not related with parity, gestational age, birthweight or type of anaesthesia. Predictive values of RWCs in detecting poor weight gain in 030 days were: 2nd day; limit =9.4%, specificity = 91.5%, 4th day; limit =-10.2%, specificity = 89.4%, 7th day; limit =-6.3%, specificity = 85%, sensitivity = 78%, 14th day; limit =+0.8%, specificity = 91.5%, sensitivity = 83.3%. Adjusting for birthweight z scores, RWC at 14th day had a significant influence on 1st and 2nd month bodyweight z scores. Bodyweight z scores were significantly correlated with the z scores of bodyweight in 15 months but not with that of 6 months. Conclusion Incidence of excessive weight loss is very high among Caesarean delivered babies. RWC at earlier measurements proves satisfactory in predicting poor infant growth. Management strategies based on identifying infants at risk could prevent excessive weight loss and improve future growth of those infants. Setting This cross-sectional observational study was conducted via a web-based survey in Turkey. Methods Pharmacists registered at a professional web site (n = 822) were invited to fill in the study questionnaire; 624 questionnaires were completed and further analyzed. Pharmacists who agreed to participate in the study completed the questionnaire which was structured to elicit their demography, professional experience, counseling practices and attitudes regarding ECP. Attitudes were measured by 18 items under four domains: "reproductive health; information and availability; risk behavior and regulatory restrictions". The answer choices consisted of five items as: "totally agree, agree, neither agree nor disagree, disagree and totally disagree". Main outcome Measures The rate of counseling on various aspects of the ECPs and the rate of negative/positive attitudes. Results The aspects most frequently counseled on by the pharmacists were dosage, timeframes, efficacy and pregnancy testing. Less frequently counseled aspects were mechanism of action, methods of contraception and side-effects. In general, the pharmacists displayed positive attitudes towards all domains of the survey; while they were negative to the items suggesting that ECP should be sold only to women and only on prescription. Another interesting finding is that 58 % of the pharmacists agreed with the item suggesting limiting the ECP sales to those over 18 years of age. Conclusions Our results showed that the pharmacists served the clients in need of emergency contraception more frequently than the other health-care providers and in general had favorable attitudes towards ECP. Some aspects of their counseling practices need to be improved. This can be accomplished through continuous education programs that would equip them with the competence to provide counseling on emergency contraception which will in turn help prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce abortion rates. ARDL cointegration analysis yields an income elasticity of calorie intake of 0.22, while the food-price elasticity is insignificant. The results suggest that economic growth in Turkey has improved calorie intake; future income growth can alleviate further inadequate nutrition. This result confirms Engel's law too. An augmented form of Granger causality analysis is conducted amongst the variables. The short-run causality testing reveals the existence of only one causality which is running from income to calorie intake. The post-sample variance decompositions indicate that income is the main cause of the increased calorie intake in the long-run. The estimated long-run model appears to have stable parameters. Methods: Twenty three patients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia and twenty three controls were recruited for the study. Plasma samples of all subjects were analyzed for TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma, IL1 beta, IL-2, IL-6, and IL-12 concentrations and NK-cell activity is measured in the peripheral blood samples of the subjects. Results: We found significant differences on the mean values of IL-12 (p = 0.01) and IFN-gamma (p = 0.02) between the panic disorder and control groups. In a logistic regression analysis, IFN-gamma values were significant statistical predictors of the presence of panic disorder (B = -0.07, SE = 0.03, p = 0.04). Conclusion: The most important implication of our results is to suggest a relation between panic disorder and low levels of IFN-gamma compatible with the results of the animal studies showing that IFN-gamma plays a role by acting to regulate the development of anxiety-like behaviors. Purpose of the Study: The study aimed to demonstrate that by employing methodologies characteristic of teacher education, it is possible to inculcate reflective practices during teacher education and not only in field experience during pre-service training. Methods: Twenty-seven student teachers (all female) initially participated in the study, though numbers dropped to 14 and finally eight over the research period. Qualitative data were gathered via reflective essays and interviews. The data were investigated, first, for evidence that student teachers were learning to teach at an early stage via being reflective, and, second, for evidence of a causal relationship between the design of the courses and the capacity of the student teachers to become reflective learners. Results and Discussion: The data gathered shows that the design of the methodology and practicum courses enabled the student teachers to learn from teacher practices by adopting a reflective approach, and that the gap described in the literature as one between theories and practice can be overcome by using lesson plans as a springboard for adoption of critical reflection. Conclusions and Recommendations: As the student teachers move from microteaching to practicum and from there to the teaching profession, they adapt to the new conditions, but still favour the practices initially acquired during their microteaching experiences. They look forward to being given the opportunity to use their full potential, skills, abilities and knowledge to fulfil the educational needs of society and the new generation, and to creating an appealing learning climate by critically reflecting on the theories that underpin their teaching practices. Both discrete and planar location models to solve this multicriteria problem is employed. A municipal center is the main facility in a county that offers residents a variety of municipal services, including issuance of licenses and permits, tax collection, and welfare services. Because many of these services require the individuals to make additional trips to other government agencies, the traffic generated between the municipal center and other government agencies should be taken into account when the municipal center is located. An approach to quantify this additional traffic and locate the center accordingly is proposed. An approach is also demonstrated by implementing it in one of the newly established counties in Istanbul, namely Atasehir. The municipality administration has approved the methodology for determining the locations of all newly established counties and other government buildings in Istanbul. Although it is known that cardiopulmonary rehabilitation (CPR) reduces mortality and morbidity, it is not widely implemented as is in Turkey. One factor might be lack of demand since the levels of knowledge and awareness among patients who are eligible for CPR seem to be insufficient. Aim. It is aimed to investigate the level of awareness and knowledge of CPR among patients with cardiopulmonary problems. Design. Cross-sectional survey study Setting. Outpatient Methods. Knowledge regarding CPR was assessed by questionnaires given to 690 patients recruited in seven university hospitals and six training and research hospitals in which either comprehensive or limited CPR services are available. Population. Patients who have cardiopulmonary problems Results. Of the patients, 34.7% were given information on CPR by healthcare staff, and 25.3% reported that their source of information was physicians. Although 49.9% of the patients knew that they needed to exercise for their cardiac/pulmonary problems, only 23.4% and 32.1% of those were aware that fast walking and climbing stairs, respectively, would not pose a risk to their cardiac/pulmonary health. The majority of the patients believed that activities of daily living, which comprise the most important component of exercise-based CPR, were harmful for their cardiopulmonary health. We found that 31.1% of the patients exercised regularly. During their stay at the hospital, certain kinds of exercises were suggested to 62.7% of the patients, and 34.7% of these patients performed various exercises. Of the patients who were given detailed information on cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, 69% stated that they would be willing to participate in a similar program. Conclusion. Although nearly half of the patients stated that they needed CR, it was observed that the ratio of patients who had true knowledge of CPR was low among patients. It is imperative to furnish patients with information on CPR, both in the field of PMR and throughout Turkey, and to put more effort into running those services effectively. Furthermore, we should make an effort to increase the level of liaison between patients and physicians and other healthcare professionals who participate in the treatment of cardiac/pulmonary patients. Using heteroskedastic maximum likelihood models and data from the fourth wave of the World Values Survey for 45 democratic countries, we show that as a personal belief system, religiosity contrasts with democratic principles, generating opposition to democracy while increasing ambivalence towards democratic principles among religious people. Nevertheless, at the group level, religion also serves as a social institution which increases the homogeneity of one's social network, leading to lower ambivalence, and makes for an active minority group which benefits from the democratic framework, consequently increasing support overall for a democratic regime. This double-edged sword effect explains the mixed results currently found in the literature on religiosity and democracy, and clearly illustrates the multidimensionality of religiosity. The HOGCR is a multi-level clustering algorithm that groups demand nodes into smaller clusters at each planning level, enabling the optimal solution of cluster routing problems. The routing problems are represented as capacitated network flow models that are solved optimally and independently by CPLEX on a parallel computing platform. The HOGCR preserves the consistency among parent and child cluster solutions obtained at consecutive levels. We assess the performance of the algorithm by using large scale scenarios and find satisfactory results. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. In this paper, data for 23 European countries were used over the period of 1995-2009 on the quarterly basis. Two different tests were used to estimate the stationarity of the model variables, which are the Ng and Perron (2001) unit root test procedure and approach proposed by Zivot and Andrews (1992) for unit root test allowing for a structural shift. Then the Kejriwal and Perron (2008, 2010) structural break test was applied to determine the presence of structural breaks in series. In most countries except Belgium and Finland UDmax and WDmax tests rejected the hypothesis of no breaks. To test the cointegration relationships between investment and saving flows of European Union members three different cointegration techniques were applied to the data. Firstly, the Johansen (1988) cointegration approach was used for the case of no cointegration shifts, then the Gregory and Hansen (1996) cointegration test was applied, which allows for one structural shift. Finally, again the Johansen' cointegration approach was used: however, this time with the inclusion of dummy variables related to earlier selected structural break locations. The empirical results provided stronger evidence of cointegration between investment and saving variables in the case of structural break accommodation compared to the case where the presence of structural breaks was ignored. The estimated saving retention coefficient in the presence of structural breaks using the Kejriwal and Perron (2008, 2010) approach appeared relatively low in many cases, illustrating by this the openness of estimated countries. In general, world and European countries with time have a tendency to a higher level of their capital market openness. Estimations of a saving retention coefficient in the presence of structural changes do not support the existence of the Feldstein-Horioka Puzzle in the considered EU countries, except Belgium. The article explores how traditional gender roles and family structure in Turkish society limit their full participation in political, economic, and public life. The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted with a total of 30 young women who are house girls from a district in Istanbul and another district in Ankara. The women interviewed were between the ages of 18 and 24, single, living with their family, and not engaged in full-time education or employment. Historically contextualizing genderrelated development in Turkey, the differences in access to full citizenship among two groups of women based on factors including levels of education, rural/urban divide, socialization, adherence to traditional family values of obedience, loyalty to parents, and the like and drawing on quotes from interviews, the article describes the ways that the experiences of house girls are constrained by traditional gendered expectations compared with other women in Turkey. Expectations of house girls includes fulfilling family obligations at home, conforming to specified codes of behavior, remaining virgin until marriage, and not participating in the formal educational system or the labor market. The authors argue that, compared with students or working women, house girls are restricted to the private sphere. This leads them to feel a sense of boredom, low self-worth, lack of economic empowerment, and inability to fully participate in the public sphere of contemporary Turkish society. The authors also underline the gap between youth studies and women's studies and argue that the study of house girls is well situated for addressing this gap. Sophisticated algorithms are needed for solving large instances of the problem. A hybrid framework that includes a Ruin and Recreate (RR) procedure and an acceptance criterion similar to the Metropolis Criterion, is proposed for the problem in this study. Ruin and Recreate is used to create new individuals in the search process and the acceptance mechanism is used for balancing the exploration and exploitation of the search space. Also hill climbers are integrated into the framework for fine-tuning. Furthermore, the algorithm is run on a population of individuals and a certain amount of crossover operation is utilized on the population in order to benefit from the reproduction process that takes place in Genetic Algorithms (GAs). The constructed algorithm is applied on frequently used data sets in the literature and the results are compared with other state of the art algorithms. In the proposed method, genetic operations are replaced with new ones which suit better to the structure of the problem. Performance of this MOGA framework is further boosted by hybridizing it with a Local Search (LS) algorithm. The aim of this hybrid approach is to increase the variety within the population through the genetic operations and to improve those individuals further by using LS. Initially, a frequency component extraction is realized from the original image. At this stage, the image is divided into windows in order to represent consecutive different time periods using STFT. Then, the dominant frequencies of each window are mapped into corresponding sound frequencies through Fourier analysis. This procedure is applied twice and two series of sound frequency components are produced: The first is originated from the brightness of the image, the second from the dominant RGB layer. The connection between the visual impression of the image and the psychoacoustic effect of the sound mapping is done by using different musical scales according to the dominant color of the image. The results revealed that the melody extracted from this analysis produces a certain psychoacoustic impression, as it has reported by several volunteers. Despite the fact that volunteers could not always do the association between image and sound, they could hardly believe that the music was produced by an algorithmic procedure. Therefore, our method can be called as structural change detection. To summarize the structure in an image, we benefit from local features and their graph based representation. Extracting the structure from both images, we benefit from graph matching to detect changes. We tested our method on 18 Ikonos image pairs and discuss its strengths and weaknesses. Recent developments in theory support the view that the key driver for economic growth in global economies is innovation. According to this conceptual framework, a model is developed to examine the relation between researchers employed in R&D departments, R&D expenditures, patents as innovation indicators, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as economic growth. A panel regression model is used to investigate these relations for chemical firms listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) between 1998 and 2010. The data for this study has been obtained from the Turkish Statistical Institute and the Turkish Patent Institute. The results of analysis indicated a positive and significant relation between R&D expenditure and the number of R&D employees in influencing economic growth. (C) 2012 Published by Elsevier Ltd. Our new idea, called the geometric shortcut, allows an efficient simulation for the case of independent obligors. It is even possible to show that, when the average default probability tends to zero, its asymptotic efficiency is higher than that of the naive algorithm. The geometric shortcut is also useful for models with dependent obligors and can be used for dependence structures modeled with arbitrary copulae. The paper contains the details for simulating the risk of the normal copula credit risk model by combining outer importance sampling with the geometric shortcut. Numerical results show that the new method is efficient in assessing tail loss probabilities and expected shortfall for credit risk portfolios. The new method outperforms all known methods, especially for credit portfolios consisting of weakly correlated obligors and for evaluating the tail loss probabilities at many thresholds in a single simulation run. This model has been developed by utilising the lean practices defined in the literature. The proposed model has been successfully applied to a large number of automotive part suppliers, and has been tested for its statistical validity. To test the proposed model, data were obtained from 207 automotive part suppliers by using the Computer-aided Telephone Interview method. Validity and reliability tests of the developed model of leanness are realised through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Correlation analyses are used to examine the relationships between the lean applications and company performance and size. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is applied to reveal whether there are differences in the use of lean techniques across different company categories. The study shows that, in general, Turkish automotive part suppliers are performing their internal production in compliance with the lean manufacturing principles. Furthermore, it is found that there is a significant relationship between adaptation of lean principles by the supplier firms and their performance. The proposed model of leanness can be used by companies in the automotive industry to measure their leanness levels. In this study, 115 individuals being monitored for substance abuse treatment on probation at the Probation and Help Center under the Republic of Turkey's Ministry of Justice's Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of Istanbul were included successively between the dates of April 2008 and April 2009. During a 24-week follow-up, individuals whose urine analyses were clean 6 times consecutively were considered to have completed the treatment successfully. To determine the effect of sociodemographic factors and substance use characteristics on treatment completion, a semistructured sociodemographic data survey was used. Also, the participants' criminal records were examined. Atotal of 115 people participated in the study. One hundred ten (95.7%) of them were male. Sixty-eight (59.1%) of the participants had completed treatment. Age group, education level, age of onset for substance use, number of substances used, employment status, and criminal records showed a significant difference between treatment completers and noncompleters. When a logistic regression analysis was done, only number of substances used and criminal record (other than drug possession) were significantly different for the 2 groups. The current treatment program for polysubstance users and individuals with a criminal record is insufficient. It is necessary that treatment systems be developed so they can be beneficial for these types of patients. SERS of proteins is always difficult due to their complex, flexible and diverse structures. This difficulty is one of the major obstacles hindering the applicability of SERS for the labelfree detection and identification. In this study, we have employed several sample preparation approaches involving the packing AgNPs with protein molecules in a proper manner to allow the polarization of the electron system of proteins in coherence with the nanostructured noble metal system. The applicability of heat denaturation kinetics is perused for the detection and identification of proteins in model protein mixtures. Human serum albumin, transferrin, hemoglobin and the binary mixtures of these proteins are used as models. We have found that the SERS spectrum of each protein in the protein mixture is rather different at an increased temperature, which could be used to distinguish a protein in the protein mixture. Entrepreneurial activity is beneficial for both men and women, including those in developing countries. However, men and women may not engage in entrepreneurship to the same extent because of differential access to (various forms of) capital. This study examines the relative importance of three types of capital - human, family and financial in pursuing entrepreneurship. Using data collected in Turkey, we find that regardless of sex, all three forms of capital influence the likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur in varying degrees. Contrary to expectations, the impact of human capital on the likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur is higher for women than men. Data also revealed that family capital facilitates women's entry into entrepreneurship only when family size is very large (i.e. seven or more). No gender differences are observed in the impact of financial capital on the likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur. Findings suggest that to encourage entrepreneurship in Turkey, policy-makers should emphasize access to human and financial capital. Furthermore, findings suggest that women's likelihood of becoming an entrepreneur will be especially encouraged if they have increased access to education, as well as the skills necessary to take advantage of their family capital.
