Their CD, Faerie Wind, includes great variety, from energetic dance tunes to laments, folksy songs, to the occasional jig. Also in the Celtic genre is Lisa Chondra, a lilting soprano singing mostly ballads and traditional and contemporary classics. Her CD, On Dove’s Wings, is an excellent introduction to Celtic music. Barbara Nagy is a new artist on our jazz list. It’s rare that such a talented jazz flutist is heard, and this flutist just happens to be just as gifted with the soprano saxophone. Night Sky is her first professional release and features plenty of improvisation. Island Wind is a mostly woodwind instrument, 8-piece band playing songs that are an electrifying mix of calypso and jazz. Discovered at a music festival in Barbados, Island Wind has composed a CD full of music that’s not quite like anything you’ve heard before. Jammin’ in St. Michael is a live CD of their favorite songs. New to the reggae scene is Johnny Gray, an artist who combines reggae and ska for an eclectic mix that’s both expressive and percussive. Rhythm Maker is a CD that never stops generating catchy beats and controversial lyrics. Gray grew up in Jamaica, the traditional birthplace of ska, but he infuses each track with his own unique approach. New to Cross Oceans Music is our first Chutney music release. Chutney is part Indian music, part soca, and part calypso. Babita Jethani, a native of Trinidad, sings lighthearted dance tunes on Mango Chutney, her first CD. Chickha Memi is another of our new artists with a fall release, Rai Forever. Rai is a genre of world music from Algeria. It started as a combination of popular music and Bedouin desert music and has now been combined with modern pop sounds. Memi sings in both Arabic and French. Veteran Artists Several of this season’s new releases are from some favorite artists that have been with Cross Oceans Music for years. Genre New Age New Age Flamenco Jazz Celtic Reggae Hip Hop Artist Wish Harvest Moon Fiesta Harvey Green Maeve Brackett Joe Ratt Greg Sanutra Many of you have been anxiously awaiting the latest release from the new age band Wish. Wish’s new CD, Wonders, features more of the techno beat and blend of traditional and electronic music the band is known for. Also in new age, Harvest Moon presents an ethereal blend of electronica, woodwind instruments, and female vocals on the new CD Breaking Through. Guest artist Shaunte Collins plays the organ on several songs. If you’re looking for a CD that creates a party atmosphere, Fiesta’s newest release Flamenco Paradise may be for you. Fiesta is a Spanish band comprised of piano, drums, several guitars, horns, saxophones, and an electronic keyboard. Flamenco Paradise is sure to keep you dancing. It’s been four years since Harvey Green’s last album, but Midnight Rhapsody is sure to please. This versatile jazz saxophonist plays with a 12-piece band. Half of the tracks are covers of jazz standards while half are original tunes composed by Green. Celtic singer Maeve Brackett is back with soothing melodies from her native Ireland on her latest CD, Home. Maeve performs both new ballads and traditional favorites, particularly those songs she loved as a girl growing up in Ireland. Jamaican Joe Ratt brings his unique blend of reggae and pop to his latest release, Chrysalis. Ratt is backed up by the Island Boys, the band that has backed him up for years. Greg Sanutra combines hip-hop, rap, and reggae in his latest release, No Backing Down. Sanutra’s latest CD chronicles his experience growing up in Haiti, dealing with violence, the convergence of religions and cultures, and coming of age in a tumultuous time. Jalisa’s sophomore release, Light of Day, brings the mix of batuku and funana for which she’s known, along with a few ballads. Jalisa is a native of Portugal, and most of the songs on this CD have a contemporary, upbeat style.
