Summary description
The Study Year Abroad (SYA) is a special programme for overseas students who would like to spend
their Study Year Abroad at Laban. As a student on the Programme, you will be part of a diverse
community of students from a wide variety of backgrounds and training and with different types and
levels of expertise and experience.
Your individual programme will be made up from the components offered on Laban’s One Year
Programmes. You have a free choice from the components offered, but you must ensure that your
selection meets the credit requirements of your home college or university.
This enables you to select areas of dance study that will support you in working towards your
individual learning / training / professional goals. You may choose to select complimentary or
contrasting subject areas; emphasise practical study or sample across a range of practical dance
classes, applied study, seminar based academic study and so on.

How will I learn?
Learning takes place within formal taught classes, in workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorials and
through work-based learning. Learning and teaching methods support the acquisition of knowledge
and skills, alongside critical thinking and reflective evaluation. You will be encouraged to be active
learners in contributing to discussion, peer observation and feedback and group work. Alongside the
taught aspect of the Programme, there are hours allocated for self-directed study – this may comprise
set tasks and reading to support taught sessions, or individual reflection and research.
Extra-curricular activities
An important aspect of the programme is increasing your knowledge of the art form, and you are
encouraged to attend as many performances, exhibitions, showings etc. in as many different art forms
as you are able. These do not always have to be in major professional venues; there are many local
arts events and activities that are of high quality and reasonably priced or sometimes free of charge.
During the year there are performances by visiting professionals in Bonnie Bird Theatre. There are also
many internal showings and sharings of work from all programmes at Laban.
How will I be assessed?
Overview
Assessment is through a variety of mechanisms that evaluate knowledge, skills and values
demonstrated in relation to the areas of study. Modes of assessment are varied, to suit different
learning styles and enable you to apply a range of practical, written and oral skills in evidencing your
learning. Assessment includes: practical technique classes; practical presentations; performance;
written critical observations; individual/group oral presentations; teaching; viva voce; essay; project
proposals and evaluations.
What do I have to do to pass?
To pass you need to satisfactorily PASS (50%) each selected component, which effectively means
you must achieve a grade of C- or above, as defined by the One Year Programme Grade Descriptors.
The proposed grade will reflect, in the view of the assessment panel, the extent to which the
assignment meets both the general and component-specific assessment criteria. There is provision to
retrieve a failure under certain defined circumstances.
On completion of your programme, Laban will provide a transcript of your results and you will be
awarded with a Laban Certificate. In order to achieve the Laban Certificate:


