SLO for Art 108 Author: Eileen Doktorski-Marzullo Draft Date: October 8, 2010 Courses: ART 108, Beginning Drawing Institutional Learning Outcomes Communication: The student will communicate effectively, expressing thoughts, goals and needs through use of appropriate modes and technologies. Aesthetic Awareness: The student will possess aesthetic awareness. Social Awareness: The student will demonstrate societal awareness. Responsibility: The student will display personal and civic responsibility. Scientific Awareness: The student will possess an awareness of the physical and biological principles related to science. Department Learning Outcomes 1) Students will demonstrate problem solving skills in the process of producing art. 2) Students will demonstrate a general awareness of artistic cultures and styles. 3) Students will demonstrate the use of appropriate terminology in evaluating art and design. 4) Students will develop a collection of works that demonstrate their creative style, technical skill, and personal approach to subject and media. Course Learning Objectives 1. Define and properly use drawing terminology. 2. Demonstrate perceptual skills by accurately portraying three-dimensional objects in space using freehand perspective techniques: a visual analysis of relationships. 3. Create, using complex three dimensional objects, drawings that demonstrate an understanding of contour and negative space. 4. Create value scales using pencil, charcoal, and ink. 5. Use the fundamentals of light logic and the manipulation of values to create textures, and to analyze and describe three-dimensional forms. 6. Employ linear perspective to describe objects and interior/exterior spaces. 7. Create drawings that demonstrate technical and creative skills using pencil, charcoal, and ink. 8. Distinguish the aesthetic of the Western drawing tradition as compared to non-western art. 9. Analyze and evaluate their own and other’s drawings for their aesthetic content, visual effectiveness, and the utilization of skills. SLO’s are based upon objectives 1, 2 and 7 of Course Outline of record: SLO Scale Components Drawing Terminology (essay, verbal presentation, critique or quiz) Excellent: Correct, provides specific in-depth discussion of drawing using proper art terminology. Satisfactory: Correct, as above, but may lack vocabulary or depth of discussion. Poor: Depth of discussion and terminology are lacking. Drawing of three dimensional objects created from direct observation Excellent: Correct use of the following; overlap, position on the vertical plane and decrease in scale to show spatial relationships. The drawing demonstrates that a visual analysis of relationships, such as sighting, has been used to properly align elements of the compositions. Satisfactory: Correct, as above, but without proper alignment of elements. Poor: More than one the following is lacking: Correct use of overlap, position on the vertical plane, decreased scale to show spatial relationships and correct alignment of the elements of the compositions. Portfolio (collection of homework assignments and/or class activities and projects) Excellent: Multiple examples demonstrate skill in using a variety of drawing media to include pencil, charcoal and ink. Portfolio samples demonstrate knowledge of a few distinct characteristics identifying shading, contour and sketching. Satisfactory: Adequate examples of the above, but may lack completeness and/or depth of media. Drawings may show only one distinct characteristic of each process. Poor: Drawings do not adequately demonstrate competence with a variety of drawing media. Examples do not adequately demonstrate the important characteristic differences between drawing approaches.
