To build a foundation for students in drawing to expand on throughout their careers. 2. To develop student’s vocabulary in drawing and art in general. 3. To help students to develop their own individual styles as artists. SLO - Student will develop the skills to draw using good composition, perspective, value/lighting and technique using a variety of mediums. Course Length: 15 weeks Course Prerequisites: As listed in Course Catalog Course Requirements: Attendance, punctuality and meeting deadlines are musts! In the professional world clients have no patience for missed deadlines and the same goes for this class. Think of me as a client or art director. This will help you develop good work ethics. If two class meetings are missed you can be dropped. All of the assignments must be completed to pass the course. Participation in class is required; points can be lost for not participating. No radios, headphones, CELLPHONES or food will be allowed in class, unless approved by the instructor beforehand. Required Text: none Recommended Reading: The Practice and Science of Drawing by Harold Speed Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards Drawing Space, Form, and Expression by Wayne Enstice and Melody Peters The Art of Pencil Drawing by Gene Franks Method of Instruction: This course is taught using classroom and lab instruction employing lecture/demonstration, in-class exercises, student participation, independent student projects, midterm exam and final project. The course will operate with a basic format: At the beginning of each class there will be a critique of your work, unless the class is continuing on a piece “in progress”. Next, a new topic will be introduced and an in-class exercise will be performed. If you are absent it is your responsibility to find out what was covered in class and what homework is due. Materials and Supplies: You will need a drawing board, drawing pad-18x24-50 lb weight minimum, a few sheets of 18’x24”charcoal paper, drawing pencils (4H, 3H, 2H, H, HB, 2B, 3B 4B), assorted color pencils, waterproof India ink, a crow quill pen, an inexpensive #5 or #6 watercolor brush, assorted pens, charcoal sticks, vine charcoal (soft and medium), a few charcoal pencils, assorted stumps, kneaded erasers, pearl erasers, chamois cloth, workable fixative, exacto knife, I piece of cardstock, drafting or artist’s tape, a T-square, transparent push pins and an 8 ½” x11” sketchbook. A toolbox to carry your art supplies is recommended. Estimated Homework Hours: 3-6 hrs. per week. This sketchbook will be checked periodically and is due on the last class meeting before the final. Sequence of Instruction for the Term: Week 1 Feb. 10th - Introduction to class. Pass out syllabi. Discussion of line drawings and composition. Make Viewfinders. Homework: Two drawings-Self-portrait in line only, self-portrait of entire body in line only. 2 Feb. 17th - Line drawing. Homework: Line drawing of furniture. 3 Feb. 234th Positive/Negative ink drawings. Homework: Positive/Negative Ink Drawing. 4 March 2nd – Cross contour drawing Homework: Cross-contour drawing of fruit. 5 March 9th - Perspective review-1, 2&3 point. Do perspective drawings in class. Homework: Draw a line drawing of a corner of a room at home in freehand two-point perspective from observation on 18x24 paper. Add as much detail as possible. Show the ceiling and the floor 6 March 16th – Continue Perspective. Homework: Continue perspective drawings from previous week. 7 March 23rd - Continue Perspective. Homework: Continue perspective drawings from previous week. 8 March 30th 9 April 6th - Still life with single light source. Homework: Still life with single light source done at home. MIDTERM - SPRING BREAK 10 April 13th - Continue Still-Life 11 April 20th - Continue Still-Life 12 April 27th - Blow up drawings (drawings done out of scale) using crosshatch technique. Homework: On 14”x17” paper draw a single object using a single light source. (Ex. Pencil, lipstick, watch, mushroom, banana, etc.) Greatly exaggerate the size. Give the piece textural and tonal integrity. Consider composition. 13 May 4th – Open date 14 May 11th - Begin Final Project Homework: Same 15 May 18th - Continue from week 14. Homework: Work on final project 16 May 25th 17 June 1st – Work on Final Project. Sketchbooks and late-work are due, no exceptions. – Final Critique
