-Boston CollegeDivision of Student Affairs Office of Student Involvement Graduate Assistant Position Assistantship title: Campus Activities Board/ O’Connell House Manager Graduate Assistant (two-year position for 2015-16 and 2016-2017 for students in the Higher Education Program) Note: This is a 2 year position and the student must be enrolled in the Master’s program in Higher Education for both academic years, with an opportunity to continue work throughout the summer months (to be arranged and negotiated with supervisor). This is a live-in position, sharing residency with other graduate students and or undergraduate students in the O'Connell House. Reporting to: Paul Murphy, Assistant Director, Office of Student Involvement Hours per week: Approximately 25 hours per week with nights and weekends beginning midAugust 2015 (fall semester: August, 17 2015 – December 19, 2015, Spring Semester January 4, 2016 – May, 16 2016) Stipend: $19,000 per year with room and board. Tuition Remission: N/A Objective This assistantship is designed to provide a graduate student with experience in the field of student programs/student affairs with an emphasis on student engagement. The primary responsibilities will be to implement, advise, and evaluate the Campus Activates Board (CAB) as well as manage the O’Connell House. The incumbent will also act as an event manager at selected events. Job Responsibilities Advise Campus Activities Board Coordinate the planning, managing, and evaluation of CAB events, in collaboration with another Graduate Assistant and under the supervision of the Assistant Director, Programming. Specific duties include budget management, coordinating the event schedule, and coordinating event logistics. This includes attending select late night weekend events. Train students on event programming and management. Attend weekly Council meetings. Have one-on-one meetings weekly with executive team. CAB Member Recruitment/Transition Coordinate the recruitment of undergraduate students and student leaders to actively participate in the CAB and manage a smooth transition in leadership from year to year. CAB Member training and retreats Plan and execute a fall and spring comprehensive training for all board members. Develop learning outcome, training curriculum, and appropriate assessment tools. O’Connell House (OCH) Manager The graduate assistant will act an OCH Manger taking on a rotating list of responsibilities throughout the 2 year assistantship. All OCH managers are required to work 1 duty night per week and 2-3 weekend nights per month as well as attend weekly OCH staff meetings. The O'Connell House serves to meet the needs of undergraduate students by providing a student union with many services. The O'Connell House offers space for meetings and programs led by Boston College groups, and O'Connell House staff also provides programming and entertainment. O'Connell House serves as a home away from home where students can feel comfortable to study, socialize, and spend recreational time. Office of Student Involvement The graduate assistant will participate with members of the Office of Student Involvement staff at full staff meetings on a bi-weekly basis. The meetings provide an opportunity to share experiences and learn about different aspects of student affairs. The graduate assistant will assist or serve as event manager at a number of events sponsored by the office and/or student organizations, including Student Activities Day, Club Officer Orientation, First Year Welcome, Senior Week, Leadership Awards Ceremony, Undergraduate Government of Boston College events, UGBC AHANA Leadership Council events, leadership trainings, etc. Additional opportunities for involvement in OSI activities and responsibilities will also exist. Finally, there will be opportunities for campus involvement beyond the normal scope of responsibilities. Student Affairs The graduate assistant will participate in monthly Student Affairs meetings, and professional development meetings offered by Student Affairs and the Dean of Students Office. Experiences, Knowledge, and Skills Gained The graduate assistant should leave this assistantship with specific, outside-the-classroom experience in developing and executing programs with a breadth of topics, size and difficulty: advising students; contract negotiations; budget forecasting and understanding of university financial systems; applying student development theory to practice; developing learning outcomes and coordinating assessment; and be conversant about major issues facing student affairs and higher education. The position also requires the ability to work with, mentor, support and respect students within the context of the Jesuit and Catholic mission of Boston College. Qualifications: Strong communication and interpersonal skills; strong motivational and organizational skills; ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks and be detail oriented; creativity, initiative, and flexibility; willingness to work as part of a team; understands issues of diversity; technological competence, especially with Microsoft Office and web experience helpful; willingness to work nights and weekends; interest in learning about current issues in Student Affairs; interest in working with undergraduate students; experience with student activities and programming strongly preferred.
