This is a sample letter. You can create your own letter or use this letter, modifying all underlined
portions for your candidates names and dates of Walk. With a Word processor you can simply
replace all “John” and separately all “Mary” with your candidate names. Also, change other
underlined portions including the sponsor information at the bottom of the page. Please review
changed letter at all underlined places.
TO THE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND ACQUAINTANCES OF John and Mary Doe
We are Sponsor’s Name, and we are good friends of John and Mary Doe. (Optionally, insert any personal
comments about your relationship with candidates).. We are excited to be sponsoring John and Mary for a
weekend of spiritual renewal called, “THE WALK TO EMMAUS”. The weekend is filled with many
beautiful and meaningful expressions of God’s Love. So we are delighted to provide this experience for
our friends, John and Mary . Although this will be a shared experience, they will go on separate
weekends. John’s weekend is September 14-17th ,. Mary’s weekend is the following weekend, September
21st -24th.
As we mentioned, these are weekends where John and Mary will encounter the beauty, depth, and
refreshment of Jesus’ Love for them through special acts of love that are woven throughout the 72 hours.
Some of these special acts of love are surprises that come in the form of letters, notes, and cards,
containing life-giving, affirming messages from people who have touched their lives in some way. THIS
IS WHERE YOU COME IN! The relationship that you have or have had with John and Mary really
matters to them. So, we are asking that you write a short letter or jot a note on a card to each of them,
individually. These messages are to be an expression of love and affirmation, letting each of them know
how special he/she is, what his/her relationship has meant to you, what you appreciate about him/her, and
perhaps that you’ll be remembering him/her in prayer during their weekends. You can be as creative as
you like with your message; jotting something on the back of a photo or memento, drawing a picture,
including balloons or confetti, etc. HOORAY for email, especially those of you who live far away! The
message doesn’t have to be elaborate or long to touch them with your love and thoughtfulness. Just the
fact that you took the time to write will mean a lot to each of them. John and Mary will be the only ones
reading their letters. Again REMEMBER, THESE LETTERS ARE A SURPRISE, so you must not let
them know you are doing this. When sending your letters, please follow these instructions:

Write your letter to John or Mary and sign it.
Put the letter into an envelope and seal it.
Write John or Mary’s name (first and last names) on that envelope.
Put the envelope(s) inside another envelope and mail it to us.

PLEASE, observe the deadlines for these letters, and remember to write a separate letter to
John and to Mary. We need John’s letters by Tuesday, September 12th. We need Mary’s
letters by Tuesday, September 19th.
We deeply appreciate anything you might contribute to the warmth and beauty of John and Mary’s
Emmaus weekends. Thank you for your willingness to participate in these expressions of love, friendship,
and appreciation. We hope these letters will be as meaningful for you to compose and give, as it will be
for John and Mary to receive them.
