SciencesPo Alumni UK Charity Gala Dinner On Thursday 25 September 2008 At The Royal Automobile Club 89 Pall Mall, London SW1Y 5HS Under the patronage of His Excellency Maurice Gourdault-Montagne, French Ambassador to the UK Guest speakers: www.sciencespo.co.uk Mr Richard Descoings, Director of SciencesPo Sir Howard Davies, Director of London School of Economics SciencesPo – A brief overview Established in Paris in 1872 to modernise the training of civil servants, Sciences Po alumni include 28 past and present French Primes ministers and Presidents (François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy amongst them) and 12 past or present foreign heads of State or government, as well as many prominent politicians, including Sir Austen Chamberlain, Peace Nobel Prize winner and one of Britain’s most popular past Foreign Secretaries. In business, the school can claim to have housed 14 of the current CEOs of France’s 40 largest companies. This impressive record is not confined to France: the 2007 annual higher survey conducted by the Ecole des Mines de Paris, which bases its ranking on the institutions attended by the CEOs of the 500 biggest multinational companies, rates Sciences Po as the 8th best university in the world. Mr / Mrs / Miss / Ms Initials _________ Surname ___________________________ Address ______________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ While proud of its rich tradition, SciencesPo has also led the way to adapt to the 21st century by a series of innovative initiatives through its modern-minded director Richard Descoings. It attracted international media attention in 2003: with a new entrance system aimed to broaden its traditionally upper middle class student-body by recruiting from economically depressed suburbs of Paris. While always attracting foreign students, the school has become over the past few years a truly global school: with a third of its 6,700 students coming from abroad, SciencesPo appears today as the most international of all French universities and grandes écoles, as shown by its extended and prestigious exchange programs, with universities including LSE, Oxford, Harvard, Columbia, Princeton and Berkeley. As such Sciences Po can claim to have the most extensive partnership network of any French university having ties with the best institutions in 54 countries. SciencesPo in London Sciences Po’s links to London have always been strong. In 1895, Sidney and Beatrice Webb used the Sciences Po curriculum as part of their inspiration for creating the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), which has now become one of Sciences Po’s closest partners. Today, SciencesPo alumni UK network reaches over 700 people and organises regular events such as conferences in partnership with the French Embassy, dinner-debates with prominent SciencesPo alumni and meetings with French politicians. Members of the Sciences Po Alumni UK who took part in the fund raising team include Frédérique Andreani, alumnus and journalist, Stefan Lavau, alumnus and treasurer of Sciences Po Alumni UK, Julien Artero, alumnus and in charge of events and conferences of the association, Yves Djimi, alumnus and in charge of young UK alumni and Coralie Poidatz, alumnus.
