Dear Collegiate Communication 101 Student:
Welcome to Oakland University! As the facilitator of your COM 101 course, I want to take a moment to
introduce myself to you prior to the first day of class. My name is insert instructor name and I am
a/an position title for department or office. I am excited to meet you and help in your transition to
college.
During orientation, you registered for the Connections program, a group registration experience where
you and a group of your peers are enrolled in two or more classes together during the fall semester. As
you know, COM 101 is one of the connected courses, and as your facilitator for this course, I will work
diligently to help you determine ways to be successful in your transition to college. My hope is that you
will work with your classmates to motivate and challenge each other throughout your first semester at
OU.
The Collegiate Communication course is the perfect opportunity to work with you individually and in small
groups. The goal is to provide you with an opportunity to meet weekly in a relaxed classroom
atmosphere where we can discuss strategies for success in college and in life. My expectation is that you
come to class enthused to learn more about yourself and the campus. I will try to make each class
exciting and relevant to your needs, and assume that you are a partner in the process.
The required textbook is On Course: Strategies for Creating Success in College and in Life – Study Skills
Plus Edition, 2nd Edition by Skip Downing, Wadsworth Cengage Learning. The textbook can be purchased
at the Barnes & Noble at Oakland University Bookstore. Please purchase the textbook before the first
class on insert day of the week, date, time, location. The first class is our most important meeting.
Please plan on spending the entire time together. There will be plenty of information to learn and to
share. If class is held in the REC, include information on bringing their student ID to enter
the building!
I also hope to meet you prior to the start of classes at New Student Orientation Part Two, which
takes place on Tuesday, September 2. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. outside the Oakland Center. I
hope to see you there!
If you have any questions prior to our first class meeting, please feel free to contact me and I will be
happy to help!
Sincerely,
