Graduate Profile

Introduction
The Graduate Profile is a statement of the generic and specific attributes and skills of graduates of
the programme including the body of knowledge attained (CUAP Functions and Procedures, 20132014). The framework for graduate outcomes in the Graduate Profile may vary depending on the
award, however attention should be paid to the development in graduates of lifelong learning skills.
A Graduate Profile may contain the personal attributes, interactive attributes and specific
programme attributes which should ideally be displayed by graduates.
Bachelor of Music
Dispositions, Skills and Graduate Attributes
Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Music from the University of Canterbury will:



Be well trained in the elements of music: music theory, musicianship and harmony;
Have well-developed skills in writing, discussing and analysing music of many genres,
periods and styles;
Have a knowledge and understanding of music as it is experienced and utilized across music
communities and through the music industry in New Zealand and the world.
In addition to these general qualities:
Students who complete a Major in Musical Culture will have:



Developed music analysis and musicological skills to a high level;
Developed music research skills including the use of library and database resources;
A broad knowledge of music through complementary studies in a secondary area such as
composition, performance on an instrument or in community music.
Students who complete a Major in Performance will:



Be skilled performers in an instrument or voice;
Have experience in group music-making in large and small ensembles including preparation,
rehearsal and concert performance techniques;
Have developed strong professional attitudes in their practice and preparation for
performing.
Students who complete a Major in New Music will:




Be skilled composers/music creators and will have developed a “personal voice” in their
creative endeavours;
Have excellent complementary and contributory skills in such areas as music technology,
orchestrating, arranging
and remixing;
Have developed strong professional attitudes in their creative work including meeting deadlines
and the fulfilling of composition briefs.
This Graduate Profile is reviewed annually and was last reviewed in 2014.
