University and delight at its success,
coupled with feelings of warmth and
gratitude, are reflected in the pages of
this booklet.
As I walk around the campus, I see
much that makes me reflect on the
tremendous impact of your donations,
whether in changing the future through
research or giving a disadvantaged
student the experience of a worldclass education.

The Western Australian business
community has once again
contributed a significant amount to
the University, providing important
opportunities for which everyone at
UWA is grateful. Major endowments,
scholarships, and donations for
equipment and courses, together with
the ongoing collaboration between
academics, industry experts and
students, have all enriched the
University and expanded the range of
its offerings.
I hope that you enjoy reading the
stories we have brought together in
this celebration of philanthropy – not
least those inspired by the Alumni
Annual Fund. The Annual Fund
scholarships open many doors,
allowing our students to fulfil their
potential and explore their dreams,
as have the many alumni who have
come before them.
It is with great pleasure that I introduce
the 2012 Donor Recognition book,
which is testament to the affection and
admiration The University of Western
Australia inspires in its alumni and
friends.
I hope, too, that you fully understand
how essential are your generous gifts
to our University’s success. As we
move into a future where public
funding of universities will be far from
secure, it will be increasingly through
our philanthropic base that the
University will maintain its international
excellence and continue to advance
our state, our nation and the world.

We achieved record donations and
gifts from our alumni, and held the
biggest “thank you” event for those
who had donated in the past – and
in the same year became a World
Top 100 University.
Our unique relationship with the
corporate sector means that
students don’t just benefit financially
but also have opportunities for work
experience, with companies offering
UWA students summer placements
and internships where they can
apply their education in a practical
environment.
Programs such as Giving West have
made philanthropy a hot topic in
Western Australia and have
encouraged the great sense of
generosity among Western
Australians. The donations UWA
received in 2012 from both
individuals and corporations are
certainly indicative of this attitude.
Philanthropy includes the spirit of
volunteerism at this University, with
our alumni energetically engaging
with the inspirational work of groups
such as the Centenary Trust for
Women and the Friends Groups.
Their ongoing work is deeply
appreciated by the entire UWA
Community.
Our alumni mean a great deal to this
University, and your ongoing support
for the Alumni Annual Fund meant
that 2012 was an outstanding year
for donations to UWA.
To all our donors from 2012, whether
you are an individual, a foundation or
a corporation, we say thank you to
you for your ongoing support for our
University’s students, our campus and
the future of our University.
This book is about the stories
behind the gifts, and those who
benefit from the generosity of
donors like you.
Stories such as that of the late Bob
Telford, who first celebrated a
lifelong affinity with the University
by donating to our Annual Fund,
and then, left UWA a significant
bequest that will benefit our next
generation of engineering students
both now and in the future.

UWA was founded on a spirit of philanthropy and, as 2012 saw us prepare for our Centenary, it is timely for us to acknowledge and celebrate
all of our donors. From gifts of much-needed scholarships to life-changing opportunities for young researchers, the impact of philanthropy
continues to be felt across our campus. Support for our student, academic and research programs reached an unprecedented $34.28 million
in 2012.
We continue to develop outstanding partnerships with many of Perth’s industry leaders deepening their links with us. Equally important is the
support that we receive from our alumni and friends whose commitment to individual philanthropy has helped so many of students and
researchers.
There are many areas across the University that benefit from philanthropy. Providing support to students who face financial hardship and other
difficult circumstances through programs such as Fairway is a very popular way for our donors to directly support our students. Celebrating
achievement with a gift of a prize, or nurturing the leaders of the future by giving a scholarship make a tremendous difference to the
experience that our students have at UWA.
World-class research undertaken by UWA’s expert researchers also continues to attract support from a number of industry partners,
individuals and philanthropic foundations. There has also been significant recognition of the importance of academic leadership that paves the
way for excellence in both teaching and research with the Wesfarmers Chair in Australian History, the Kimberley Rock Art Perpetual Chair, the
Endowed Chevron Chair in Gas Process Engineering and the Iluka Chair in Vegetation Science and Biogeography all being established in
2012. This investment in our academic excellence reflects the growing importance of knowledge, creativity and innovation as the new global
economy.
For many of our alumni, a gift of a bequest will be the largest gift that they make. We were fortunate to realise some significant bequests in
2012 with over $8.4 million received including $6 million from Mr Bob Telford, an Engineering graduate from the 1940s who left funds to
support the creation of the Engineering Zone.
Thanks to the commitment, vision and passion of our
alumni and other supporters, this has been our most

telford Bequest
Ainslie Robert Telford, or “Uncle
Bob” as he was known to his
friends and family, can only be
described as a kind and
exceptionally generous person.
He had a passion for travel which
was enabled by his University of
Western Australia engineering
degree. Equally important was his
desire to help others and
frequently he covered the cost of
his friends’ children’s schooling
simply to provide young people
with an opportunity.
Originally, Mr Telford’s
engineering studies were cut short
by the outbreak of World War II
and he only completed his degree
at UWA after the war had ended,
graduating in 1947. Mr Telford
never looked back. He moved
across the Nullarbor to Melbourne
where he began a long,
successful career as an engineer.
His career was so successful
that he decided to retire in his
late 50’s, and began his
broad international travel
visiting relatives and friends
all over the world.
After twenty years of frequent
travel, Mr Telford decided to
settle down, but he didn’t let his
generosity stop.
He valued a good education, as
he knew how many opportunities
can come with learning and was
quite prepared to put money into
education by choosing to donate
several times to UWA’s Alumni
Annual Fund.
Mr Telford’s final gift to UWA
was a true recognition of the
life of opportunities that came
from his degree. In 2012 he
This bequest will help fund the
Engineering Zone – a network of new
and upgraded facilities that will enrich
the student experience, encourage
greater collaboration with industry and
provide a world-class centre of
engineering excellence.
Mr Telford’s executor, Mr Linton
Lethlean says that “He had an
appreciation that he was a Western
Australian. He had an appreciation
of where he came from”.
“He obviously had an appreciation
of the education he got, but more so
of the times he spent at The
University of Western Australia.”
“He was a combination of frugal with
himself and generous with others.”
The Dean of the Faculty of
Engineering, Computing and
Mathematics, Winthrop Professor
John Dell, says that Mr Telford’s
bequest will benefit the students
mostly.
“His generosity and foresight will
enable future generations of
engineering students to be taught in
the world-class Engineering Zone,
helping them realise their potential
to change the world.”
Mr Telford’s legacy means that
even more students can have the
opportunities and experiences he
had.
Young people are our future
Jack Bendat
One of Australia’s richest men, Perth’s
Jack Bendat has been inspired by the
simple life of the nuns of St John of
God.
“They are wonderful people. Every
cent they make from their hospitals
goes back into more hospitals, health
research and the caring profession,”
said the man named by BRW as one
of the country’s top 20 philanthropists.
“I think everybody should do things
for others. If you make it, you must
give back. You can’t take it with you
when you go.”
Indigenous students at UWA are
reaping the benefits of this generous
Californian businessman’s philosophy.
Since 2006, he has pledged nearly
a million dollars for perpetual
scholarships for rural Indigenous
youth. “Young people are the future.
I am the past … but I’m not bad for
87,” he said quietly, smiling.
“The University is very dear to me,”
said Jack, who is hugely proud of his
Honorary Doctorate from UWA and
his son’s and two grand-daughters’
UWA degrees.
The interest from the family’s
donations supports one Indigenous
student at UWA every year. The Jack
and Eleanor Bendat Rural Indigenous
Scholarships program (established
with their daughter Laura) has already
supported three successful graduates:
a political science major working as a
manager for AusAID; an
environmental science graduate
employed by Rio Tinto as an
environmental advisor; and a health
science graduate who
is in the Office for Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander
Health in the Department of
Health and Ageing.
Two current recipients are
working towards completion of
their degrees in environmental
engineering and health science.
The Bendats arrived in Australia
from the US in 1966 with nothing,
emulating Jack’s parents, Polish
migrants to the US, who also
arrived in their new land with
nothing.
Like his parents, Jack saw
opportunities in this wealthy
nation. He made his fortune
with shopping centres, radio
and television stations and
wine. And he took every
opportunity to share his wealth
with those less fortunate.
“I learned from my parents to do
things for others,” he said. “My
money goes into programs of a
permanent nature like
scholarships and housing, things
that will be here tomorrow.”
The basketball fan allows
himself the extravagance of
owning the Perth Wildcats.
“Why are they so successful?
Because they have a great
boss!” he said. Each member of
the team must carry on the
boss’s practice of giving back.
“They visited 350 schools last
year,” he said.
Does he preach to other wealthy
business people about
philanthropy? “I did, until about
five years ago. These days I am
more interested in my team.”
Another quiet smile.

dr JIm Buckee
After almost 40
years of working in
the petroleum
industry across nine
different countries,
the idea of
supporting a “bigend” pure science
project was
immensely attractive
to semi-retired
petroleum industry
executive and UWA
science graduate,
Dr Jim Buckee.
It was at a UWA
alumni dinner in
London in 2012
that Dr Buckee
crossed paths
with Professor
Peter Quinn,
Director of the
International
Centre for Radio
Astronomy
Research
(ICRAR).
“I got talking to Professor Quinn about
his work on the Square Kilometre
Array (SKA) project and asked him
what he wanted and he said what he
really would love was a postdoctoral
fellowship, so I said OK, let’s do that,”
Dr Buckee said.
The $2M Jim Buckee Fellowship in
Astrophysics will be endowed to
provide ongoing support for a new
postdoctoral fellowship to bring one of
the world’s top astrophysicists to
Perth to join ICRAR. “I’ve always
been interested in our basic
understanding of the universe,” Dr
Buckee said. “This is the sort of
fundamental issue that the SKA will
tackle and it will be a world-class
project.”
In recognItIon 2012 | 11
Dr Buckee said it is such an
exciting time to be involved in
science.
“There was a feeling during the past
10 years that we’d done most of
science … and now it’s become very
clear we don’t understand anything”
he said. “The scale of the SKA is
really quite unimaginable … and it will
be so important scientifically; it will
also be extremely important to the
University and to the State.”
Dr Buckee said he was very
grateful for the financial support he
received from the Gledden
Fellowship (at UWA) and later from
Merton College at Oxford, where he
did his PhD in astrophysics.
“It was very important … and really
helped me through a critical point in
my life and so I’m happy to do things
for other people,” he said.
Born in the UK, Dr Buckee emigrated
in 1958, attending Wesley College
before going on to complete a BSc
Honours at UWA and his PhD in
Astrophysics at Oxford University.
“I thought Wesley College and UWA
gave me a very good formal education
and so I got a lot of the principles right
… you’ve got to have the basic
principles and I think UWA prepared
me very well in that sense.”

Friends of Breast
Cancer Research
lyn meadows
Just over 25 years ago,
a group of Perth
women lost their dear
friend and golfing
partner, Jenny
Clements, to breast
cancer.
But these women didn’t
sit around weeping. In
memory of their friend
the women swung into
action and formed
Friends of Breast
Cancer Research,
pouring their emotional
energy into an annual
golf day and lunch at the
Lake Karrinyup Country
Club, and raising more
than $400,000 over the
past 24 years for
research into breast
cancer.
One of eight friends, Lyn
Meadows has stood at
the helm of the Friends
of Breast Cancer
Research group since
its inception.
“We needed to do
something practical,
to try to ensure that
Jenny had not died in
vain, and in the hope
that we could help to
prevent such deaths
in the future,” Lyn
said.
“We have seen
developments in the
detection and
treatment of breast cancer over a
quarter of a century. If Jenny had
contracted the cancer now, rather
than 25 years ago, she might still
be with us.”
When Professor Christobel
Saunders joined UWA in 2000, the
Friends’ funding went to her team in
the School of Surgery. At first it was
used to purchase equipment, but
now a large part of the funds has
been used to establish the Jenny
Clements Memorial Fellowship.
The Fellowship’s inaugural recipient
is Dr Vineeta Singh, a young
surgeon with several years of
training and experience in general
and breast surgery. She is now a
research fellow at the School of
Surgery.
Funds from the group will also
provide vital equipment for Dr
Singh’s research such as a
micromanipulator, which is used to
physically interact with a sample
under a microscope.
Working alongside Dr Singh and
Professor Saunders is research
administrator Glenys Dixon. She
spoke for the team when she said it
was difficult to find the words to
thank the Friends for their amazing,
long-term on-going support of
breast cancer research.
“We always feel at a loss for words
to adequately thank the hardworking committee members for
their passion, dedication and
continued support,” Mrs Dixon said.
But Lyn Meadows says the
gratitude should be directed the
other way.
“They are so grateful to us, yet we
feel so humble when faced with the
wonderful work they do,” she said.
“We just run a golf day: it’s nothing
compared to what they do. Sure it’s
a lot of work, but it’s also a lot of fun
and we get heaps of donations for
our auction and marvellous support.
“Last year we had 144 people play
golf and a total of 220 at the lunch.
Some of them have been coming to
the golf day for 24 years and many of
them never even knew Jenny.”

think of the Pilbara region, hard hats,
and big trucks.
But there are many more aspects to
the mining industry, and these are the
focus of a wide-ranging group
education partnership between Rio
Tinto and The University of Western

The partnership is part of a Rio Tinto
program to establish a global network
of leading education providers to
generate and foster an expertise base
for the resource industry.
Rio Tinto’s partnership with UWA
“In Germany, where I was educated,
the perception that engineering and
mining is a man’s domain is long
gone. I am optimistic that those
stereotypes are disappearing in
Australia, and hope that the Girls in
Engineering program will open young
minds to the exciting possibilities
offered by engineering as a

While Dr Boehl is targeting secondary
students, Dr Shawan Dogramaci,
Principal Hydrogeologist, Rio Tinto and
Adjunct Lecturer at UWA, is working at
the other end of the academic
spectrum, leading the Rio Tinto Visiting
Master Class program. This initiative
provides opportunities for third and
fourth year science students to engage
with Rio Tinto employees and
international experts in the fields of
environmental management, earth
science and environmental economics.
“There are 15 undergraduate and five
post-graduate places for each full-day
Master Class and students have to earn
those places,” Dr Dogramaci said. “We
want students to understand how to
mine safely, cleverly and effectively,
whilst considering the environment and
managing impacts.”

through their ongoing support, and
for that, we thank them.

Preserving the treasures
closest to our heart
With the world’s richest
collections of Indigenous rock
art in our State, it makes sense
for UWA to host the best
research into our incomparable
treasures.
Much of the funding to do the
research and to bring it to the local
community as well as sharing it
with the global community comes
from resource companies.
Generous sponsorship from Rio
Tinto, and funding from the heart
of the Kimberley Foundation of
Australia over the past few years
have established two important
Chairs in Rock Art, one in each of
the Kimberley and the Pilbara.
Funding from BHP Billiton has
resulted in a new Masters in
Professional Archaeology. These
industry partnerships have created
the platform from which the
University can confidently apply
for Australian Research Council
funding for a major research
Centre of Excellence.
Funding of $2 million sourced by
the Kimberley Foundation through
their partnerships with Ian Potter
Foundation ($1.5 million) and oil
and gas company, INPEX
($500,000), together with
matching funding from UWA, put
Professor of Archaeology Peter
Veth into the Kimberley
Foundation Ian Potter Chair in
Rock Art last year. His colleague,
Professor Jo Mc Donald has been
appointed the Rio Tinto Chair of
Rock Art Studies, with funding of
$1.08 million over 6 years.
Professor Veth and Professor
McDonald are two of the world’s
best rock art experts and they,
together with academics in UWA’s
Centre for Rock Art Research and
Management, will research, catalogue
and promote the Indigenous riches
that make the Pilbara and the
Kimberley living art and culture
centres that are unique in the world.
The combination of breathtaking art,
an ancient culture and the pure delight
that it exists and that this generation
can save it, understand it and help the
rest of the world to appreciate it,
creates an emotional response to the
many thousands of rock art images in
our north.
Maria Myers, Chair of the Kimberley
Foundation of Australia, said she
simply “fell in love with the Kimberley”
and, after that, there was no question
that she and her partners would do
everything they could to bring the
stories of the region and an
understanding of the ancient treasures
to future generations.
The University is looking forward to
the proposed establishment of the
University’s new Indigenous Cultures
Museum, to be built on the corner of
Fairway and Stirling Highway. It will be
a museum to advance understanding
of Indigenous cultures, housing the
Ronald and Catherine Berndt
collection, the UWA Collection, future
collections and the future ARC Centre
of Excellence in Rock Art.

UWA alumni across the world continue to embrace the Alumni Annual Fund, which aims to raise vital funds
for inspirational projects across campus. Each year, the Alumni Annual Fund is spearheaded by a team of
talented student callers, who engage with our alumni to keep them informed with the latest news from
campus, update contact details and seek donations to make a real difference to the everyday lives of our
students.
In 2012, with the generous support of our alumni, we were able to raise over $500,000. These funds were
directed towards supporting areas of greatest need across the University, including continuing our support of
the Fairway Program, which recognises and supports Year 12 students who face financial hardship or other
difficulties in their final year of study. Alumni donations have provided invaluable support for the Fairway
students to help them realise their goal of a university education.

alumni
provided invaluable support to these
students as they strive to achieve
their goal of a university education.
Funding from the Alumni Annual Fund
has enabled the Fairway Program to
provide individual support to the
students in several vital areas:
•
Subscription to the online
‘Your Tutor’ program, allowing the
students to login from anywhere and
chat with an online tutor
•
Specialist tutoring and
master classes during the Winter
School Camp at UWA and school
holidays
In recognItIon 2012 | 27
•
Travel costs for regional
students to attend the UWA Winter
School Camp
•
Internet access for students
as well as supplying two students with
laptops who did not have a computer
at home
•
$200 Officeworks voucher
for each student to purchase school
supplies.
This first cohort of Fairway students
proved to be a great success with 28
out of the 43 realising their goal of
attending University by enrolling to
study at UWA in 2013.
Thanks to generous support from our
alumni we are able to encourage and
inspire more young people to achieve
their true academic potential.

Year,
Akram Azimi
Making a difference
akram azImI
Born in the war-torn city of
Kabul in Afghanistan,
Akram Azimi and his family
arrived in Australia in 1999
with little more than the
clothes on their backs. After
an initial period of struggling
financially and culturally,
Akram and his family found
their place
– their sense of belonging –
in Perth.
Akram acknowledges that
“… when you consciously
realise how much you have
been given, how lucky you
are, and you allow your
heart to fill with gratitude,
you cannot help but give
back.”
As well as studying to
complete a science, law
and arts degree at UWA,
Akram became involved in
a student-led social justice
initiatives at the University
and has spent five years
working with True Blue
Dreaming to mentor young
Indigenous people from
WA’s Kimberley region.
It is for this exceptional
contribution to the
community, that Akram
was named the 2013
Young Australian of the
Year.
Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Paul Johnson,
and the University
encourage all students to
use their skills and
opportunities to make a
positive difference to the
lives of others, whether
locally, nationally or
internationally.
“Akram is already making a difference
to many young people. The University
congratulates him on being named
2013 Young Australian of the Year
and commends him for his efforts to
support others on campus and
beyond.”
In recognItIon 2012 | 31
The accomplished 25 year old also
keeps himself busy by campaigning
to end polio once and for all,
mentoring primary school students in
the small WA Wheatbelt farming
community of Wyalkatchem and has
previously mentored a Special
Olympics athlete to help raise
community awareness of disability
issues.
In 2011, Akram and fellow UWA law
students Kelsi Forrest and Dylan
Collard, together with medical student
Dwain Burridge, co-founded a
student-run initiative I am the Other,
which aims to inspire a new
generation of students to become
aware of the culture, aspirations and
perspectives of Indigenous
Australians.
As a way to recognise Akram’s
outstanding achievements, The
University awarded him a grant of
$20,000 so that he can continue his
award-winning community work while
still being able to focus on his
studies.
The funds for this grant were provided
by donations made during the 2012
Alumni Annual Fund. Akram said he
was extremely grateful to the
University and the alumni for this
generous support.
“This grant gives me the chance to
help others in ways I could not
otherwise achieve and is a great
example of how UWA, and its alumni
group, empower students to give back
meaningfully to the community,” he
said.
“I will endeavour to pass on UWA’s
kindness in kind to others in our
national and international
community”.
