BULLDOG TENNIS RULES Practice: Each player is expected to be at practice on time each designated day. Practice starts promptly at 2:45 each practice day and ends promptly at 4:15p. Rides should be waiting at this time. Due to the amount of players in the team, practices are split by gender and practice every other day. Players still need to practice on their own on non-school scheduled days. Doubles should exchange numbers and get together outside of school scheduled practices for more time to work together. Placement of players’ position to a singles or doubles player is based on tryouts and Coaches discretion. Outside activities should be scheduled around practices and matches. Plenty of notice is given regarding match times and practices, and we need 100% participation to compete as a team. If a player is involved in another school activity, please let me know so we can arrange splitting practices between the two activities. If a player is involved in private lessons, please read and sign the private lesson exemption form. If a player misses practice for unexcused absences (ISS or detention) that player must make up that practice before he/she is allowed to play in the next match. If a player is absent from school on the day of his/her practice or needs to leave due to an appointment, please email Coach Godwin or Coach Sadler to notify us, as we do not see all players during the day and we need to know why your son/daughter is not at practice. Players may challenge other players for a higher spot on the ladder during practices. Per Katy ISD policy players can only move up one spot each week. If a player is to be challenged for their spot and is absent for that day of practice the player automatically loses his/her spot for the week and will need to re-challenge the next week for their spot back. The only exception is for excused school absences. ISS results in the loss of two spots. Challenges will be the best 3 out of 5 games. Equipment: Each player is to provide their own racquet and tennis shoes (athletic shoes are a requirement). Players need to plan to bring practice clothes to school. It is not permissible to wear to practice the shorts and shirt worn to school. Beck Bulldog bags and uniforms will be distributed and it is the players responsibility to keep up the condition of their bag and uniform. Uniforms/bags returned in poor condition may be subject to replacement costs. Athletic lockers may be assigned to each player, see Coach Grossie (boys) or Coach Kahn (girls) for those lockers. Players should bring their own water out to the courts during practice as to not take up time running inside for the water fountain. Weather: In the case of rain on practice days, plan to practice inside. If it rains on a match day, the match will be rescheduled if possible. Match Days: Players need to bring their own food and drinks to the matches. Please refrain from bringing cokes and candy; sports drinks and water are the best. Sandwiches and fruits are a good pre-game meal. Players will have time on game days to do homework at the courts before and after their matches. This will alleviate the need to stay up late on match nights doing homework and/or studying. If staying up late for school work on match days becomes a habit, please let me know immediately. Parents may want to bring a lawn chair since there are a lot of tennis facilities that do not have bleachers to sit on, or they are far away from your child’s court. We will travel to our matches together as a team on the bus. Players may ride home with a parent only as long as the player is signed out by the parent on the travel release form. Parents will have to fill out a new sheet each week. Junior High tennis competition will be dual matches against other Katy ISD schools. Tennis matches will consist of an 8 game pro-set and the winner must win by a margin of 2 games. If there is a tie at 8 games in the set, we will use a 7-point tiebreaker (first to 7 points by 2) to complete the set. This is played under the USTA rules and guidelines for fair play and within the UIL contest manual. A copy of this rule book is available through the USTA website. There will be a copy of this handbook on site at the matches. During a tennis match parents, coaches, and fans MAY NOT take part in the match. You CAN NOT coach your child at anytime. If you are speaking to your child it needs to be in English ONLY, otherwise it will be considered coaching and could cost your child the match. Parents may not call lines, tell whether the ball is in or out for any reason. Players must make the call themselves. If they cannot make the call then the ball was good and play goes on. If you are warned about coaching, or making calls and continue, the next incident will cost the player/team the match. Please be sure to adhere to these rules as this is an ongoing problem, and it is unfair to the players involved. No one is allowed to sit on or enter onto the courts except the players, coaches or officials during match play. If there is problem on your court, please get the tournament official or your child’s coach for assistance with the match or point in question. DO NOT GET INVOLVED. Conduct & Eligibility: On court decorum: no foul language or cruising will be tolerated during match play. Racket abuse: any misuse of a racket; throwing/banging/beating a racket on the ground/net/post or any other object other than the ball will result in a loss of point. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated on or off the court. -The first offense will be a warning -The second offense will cost the player a point. -The third offense will cost the player the match. Depending on the severity and circumstances, the site official(s) have the right to end/default the match. If you need a ruling on anything, contact the coach or site official. Severe conduct problems during the season, on and off the court, may result in probation, suspension and/or dismissal for the tennis team depending on the severity of the problem(s). Serving any day(s) in ISS will result in missing the match following the days served. Failing grades during the season will make players ineligible to compete; but, they are allowed to continue practicing with the team while working to regain eligibility. If a student is failing at the end of the six weeks, the student is ineligible to play matches until the next progress report and will have to pass ALL SUBJECTS (electives included) to regain eligibility. They will regain their eligibility one week from the progress report date. Remember, during the time they are ineligible they must attend assigned practices to remain on the team. DIVISION TOURNAMENT INFOMRATION: Katy ISD sponsors the division tournament and will be held at Cinco Ranch High School Tennis courts. It is a single elimination round robin tournament and will be held the week of Mon. May 5th thru Thurs. May 8th. Singles and Doubles will be ranked from their season to win/loss record to establish their rank for the bracket to be played in the Katy ISD division tournament. Each JHS will send the top 6 player(s) in singles and doubles and one mixed doubles to the division tournament. All players must be present for roll call by 3:30pm and ride the bus to the tournament. Players have 10 minutes to report to the tournament director and onto the courts to complete their warm up session. If a player or team is not on the court within the time allowed then the official will call delay of game and the opponent will win by default. Please check in and out with the site official before leaving the site for any reason. If a player/team misses a match for absence or due to injury, the team may not play an alternate player/team after the first round of play is completed.
