Residential Stormwater Management: Rain Water Harvesting and Rain Garden Workshop Nonpoint source pollution is the leading cause of stream impairment in the United States. Urban and suburban areas are frequently cited as sources of excess nutrients and pesticides due in part to dense populations and the intensive management of landscapes. Correspondingly, the recent drought has highlighted the importance of water conservation in urban and suburban areas. The typical residential home uses about half of its water consumption during the growing season on landscape irrigation. Cooperative Extension is positioned in the SE region to deliver effective education programs that meet the needs of many communities the fall under Phase II stormwater programs. This program proposes to increase knowledge and accelerate the adoption of simple, onthe-ground practices that may be implemented in urban and suburban landscapes to improve the quality of stormwater runoff and promote water conservation. Program development of residential stormwater harvesting, especially rain barrels and cisterns, and backyard rain gardens will be shared through the creation of a ‘train-the-trainer’ program led by the North Carolina State University Extension Service and University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. This ‘train-the-trainer’ program supports many of the Southern Regional Water Program themes including Watershed Education and Restoration, Pollution Assessment and Prevention, and Water Quantity and Policy. The training program will assist homeowners, developers and contractors, educators, stormwater managers, and Master Gardeners interested in establishing rain gardens that promote stormwater infiltration or installing rain barrels and rainwater harvesting cisterns.
