Summer Study Information and Application

January 2016
Dear Students,
The Classics Department has limited funds available to support students interested in
programs such as those described below:
I.
First, there are programs that the Classics Department may be able to support:
A. The department has identified a number of programs that offer either intensive
introductions to Greek and Latin (i.e. the equivalent of our first year 3-credit courses) in a
single summer; there are also programs that offer study at the intermediate level. The
intensive courses do an amazing job; committed students can get a really solid grounding
in the basics and a real fluency as well; but the programs are very intense, and such
courses should not be undertaken lightly. The programs we have had most experience and
success with are CUNY in New York and Berkeley, and there are programs similar in
scope and price at University College Cork (Ireland) , and St. David's College, Lampeter
(Wales). The CUNY website is www.cuny.edu; Berkeley website
ishttp://summer.berkeley.edu; Cork website
is http://www.ucc.ie/en/classics/summerschool/.
B. A number of institutions run archaeological excavations and will, usually for a
tuition fee, accept volunteer participants. The list of programs is enormous, and we have
relatively little first-hand experience with them; listings are available on the website of
the Archaeological Institute of America under fieldwork. In recent years we have have
sent a few students each year to the excavations of an Etruscan site at Poggio Colla, in
Tuscany, run by SMU and Franklin and Marshall; their deadline for applications is March
1 (smu.edu/poggio/fieldschool.html). In addition, we have recently been asked to direct
students (probably no more than two) to the Via Consulare Project in Pompeii, run by
San Francisco State University (http://www.sfsu.edu/~pompeii/team.html). In addition,
we highly recommend the summer field school program of the American School of
Classical Studies in Rome (http://www.ascsa.edu.gr/index.php/programs/Summer), which
are not excavations but intensive travel and study of ancient sites and the Rutgers
Archaeological Field School in Italy ( http://www.ncas.rutgers.edu/upper-sabina-tiberinaarchaeological-field-school-0).
II. The Division of Humanities also has funds available to support summer research in
the humanities. The information for this will be communicated separately (i.e. directly
from the Humanities Division). All students applying for Classics department funding
are required to first apply to the Division of Humanities for summer funding...no
exceptions.
If you are interested in Classics Department funding, please complete the attached form
and return it (via email or campus mail) to Deb Sloman (dsloman1) by March 2.
I should emphasize that funding is limited and cannot at this stage be guaranteed.
Because the deadlines for some programs are earlier than our March 2nd deadline, please
apply to any programs of interest to you first and then apply for our funding by March
2nd. Please contact me if you have any questions.
Yours,
Grace Ledbetter
