Post Ablation Information You have just completed your cryoablation procedure to resolve your menstrual problems. You may experience some unpleasant affects from the surgery for the next 3-4 weeks. Cramps are common immediately after the procedure. Often it will feel similar to “bad” menstrual cramps. You can take any over the counter pain medications you normally use for your cramps. This includes Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, or Tylenol. If these meds are inadequate then use the narcotic medications that have been prescribed. If the pain does not respond adequately to the narcotics then you should give us a call. You may have a vaginal discharge. Often it will be bloody for the first 24-72 hours. The discharge then becomes more of a watery nature that may last 3-4 weeks. This vaginal discharge usually resolves after your next menses. Occasionally the discharge will have a foul smell. Uterine infection is one of the potential complications after cryoablation. The symptoms to watch for are a foul smelling, yellowish to greenish vaginal discharge; increasing cramps especially after being pain free for 1-2 days; fever (>100.4); and nausea or vomiting. If you suspect you may be developing an infection, please call. Your first menses after the cryoablation may be altered. It may be late or early. It may be heavy or light. Often you will pass the frozen endometrial tissue with your next menses. The menses may be as heavy as your normal period. You can not tell anything about the results of the cryoablation until 2-3 menses after surgery. The first period has no relationship to the ultimate results. The major restrictions after cryoablation are to refrain from any vaginal insertions. This includes douching, tampons and intercourse for two weeks after surgery. If physical activities do not cause an increase in your pain or vaginal bleeding then they are OK. Bathing and swimming are OK. You should see your doctor four months after the procedure.
