Seasonal Calendar Reminder April 2007 Household Hazardous Waste Reminder Making people aware of where and how they can dispose of hazardous household waste (HHW) can assist in reducing chemicals and pollutants that enter our stormwater runoff. Many programs accept products such as: pesticides, herbicides, solvents, rodent baits, lead and oil based paints, gasoline, waste oil, and anti-freeze. Words like: caution, danger, warning, poison, flammable, corrosive, and combustible often depict products that should be disposed of as hazardous waste. Talk with your local HHW program or solid waste department and gather information about how they promote their activities. These promotional efforts can be added to your permit report. When talking with people responsible for the program, ask if they would be willing to add information into their materials about how properly disposing of HHW helps area lakes and rivers by reducing pollutants in stormwater runoff. Don’t forget to track information about any Clean Sweep Programs available to your residents.
