Coordinate Graphs
Objective: Students will locate and name points on the coordinate plane. They will also translate
and reflect those points across both the x and y axis. Students will create their own picture on a
coordinate grid. The project includes 4 components, which are a handwritten list of the coordinates of
each point, a hand-drawing of the connected coordinates, a computer generated list of the
coordinates, and a computer generated picture of the connected coordinates.
Steps to complete your project:
1. Create a drawing or design on a coordinate grid located in Quadrant III. This drawing may not be of
a basic geometric shape, such as a triangle, rectangle, or a circle.
2. Create a list of each coordinate point included on your drawing. You must have at least 10 points
and no more than 100 points. Only the end points of a line count for this project.
3. After you have created your original image in Quadrant III, you will then reflect that image across
the x-axis. (What quadrant will your reflected image be located in? _________________________)
4. Create a list of each coordinate point included on your reflected drawing.
5. Translate your original image into Quadrant IV. You must translate both horizontally and vertically.
The entire image must be located within Quadrant IV after the translation. (How did you translate
your original image? ______________________________________________________________)
6. Create a list of each coordinate point included on your translated drawing.
7. Your drawing and coordinate points must be completed by April 13th.
8. April 14th and 15th, we will transfer our coordinate points and drawing into a computer program to
double check our work and complete the project.
9. The completed project (all four components) will be due on April 18th when you walk into class. You
may display your work on a piece of construction paper, booklet, or poster.
10. For extra credit you can rotate your reflected image 90 degrees in Quadrant I.
