PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Exploring the Arts’ Apprenticeship Program places juniors and seniors as apprentices at arts organizations for the duration of one school year (October 2015 – May 2016, with a mid-year break in January). Apprentices are paid an honorarium of $250 in December and $450 in May upon successfully completing each semester of the program. Apprentices will work approximately 3-6 hours/week (a minimum of 12 hours/month) and must make a school year-long commitment. Exploring the Arts is the nonprofit organization founded by legendary singer, Tony Bennett, and his wife, Susan Benedetto, a former public school teacher, to support arts education in public high schools. ARCHITECTURE ENNEAD ARCHITECTS is one of the most prestigious architecture firms in New York City and is recognized internationally for excellence in the field. The Apprentice will work in the resource library, a collection used by architects and designers to source materials and inspirational materials for their projects. The Apprentice will work on the maintenance of this important tool – organizing and updating materials, and working closely with library staff to support project research. Through working with this resource, the Apprentice learn about the different materials, fixtures, and tools frequently used in the design process. A successful Apprentice at Ennead will have 1) a demonstrated commitment to architecture and/or art; 2) prior internship or work experience; 3) strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills. The ideal student or this position is mature, professional, inquisitive, and outgoing. Schedule Requirements: Flexible – must be free any day afterschool for 4 hours shifts. FINE ART or SCULPTURE: THE NOGUCHI MUSEUM in Long Island City features the diverse works of artist Isamu Noguchi, who designed furniture, theatrical sets, and fine art sculpture. The Apprentice will participate as a member of the museum’s Teen Advisory Board and will also work in the Education Department, prepping art supplies, photographing events, and confirming Education program participants’ reservations over the phone. Applicants should be comfortable interacting with the public and making phone calls on behalf of the Museum. This is a good apprenticeship for a student interested in arts administration, museum education, and working with teenagers from other schools. Schedule Requirements: Must be available Wednesdays from 4:30 to 6:30 pm for TAB meetings as well as Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays for Apprenticeship shift. **NOTE: Although the Apprenticeship Program breaks for the month of January, the Apprentice will be expected to continue attending Teen Advisory Board meetings during the break. FILM or ANIMATION: THE MUSEUM OF THE MOVING IMAGE advances the public understanding and appreciation of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. The Apprentice will work in the the Education department, assisting with planning and preparation for a media lab for teens, working on research projects, assisting with the organization of the office, and performing various administrative tasks. In addition to their work in the office, the Apprentice will both participate in arts programming as well as work closely with a teaching artist, observing and assisting the artist as needed. The Apprentice will receive a museum ID, and will be able to visit any current exhibitions or screening programs. The ideal student for this position is flexible, open-minded, and comfortable working with the public, including serving as a peerleader with fellow teenagers. Experience with iStopMotion and Scratch, and interest in animation and video game design is preferred but not required. Schedule Requirements: Must be available 3:00- 7:00pm on Fridays. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM 2015-16: Student Application ILLUSTRATION or COMICS & CARTOONING: THE SOCIETY OF ILLUSTRATORS is dedicated to promoting the art of illustration and appreciating its history and evolving nature. The Society has a museum dedicated to exhibiting works of illustration. The Society also hosts illustration competitions, classes and lectures, as well as a weekly “Sketch Night.” The Apprentice will help at the weekly Sketch Night event, assist the Chair and Collections Manager of the Permanent Collection Committee, and perform administrative tasks as needed. The collections manager, also a professor of art, will work directly with the Apprentice to teach them about art history. This is a good Apprenticeship for an outgoing student with a passion for Illustration. The ideal student for this position is flexible, communicative, outgoing, and willing to ask questions. Schedule Requirements: Must be available afterschool at 3pm. Tuesdays preferred. PHOTOGRAPHY DUGGAL is a professional photography printer and imaging facility. They produce custom work for a wide range of commercial and fine art/photography clients.The Apprentice will have the opportunity to work and learn in different departments at Duggal’s headquarters, including digital printing, inkjet printing, scanning, quality control, marketing, and customer service. This is a good apprenticeship for a student interested in learning about behind-the-scenes career opportunities in photography. Schedule Requirements: Flexible. This program is flexible, but Exploring the Arts may take action if we feel students are abusing this flexibility. Excessive schedule changes could be grounds for a Warning or Expulsion. 4. Students are expected to apprentice 3-6 hours/week for a minimum of 12 hours/month for each month that the Apprenticeship Program is in session.
