KSU Master of Arts in Teaching Programs MASTER OF THE ART OF TEACHING (MAT) ART Purpose The purposes of the proposed Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Art are to prepare candidates with the knowledge, skills, competency, and dispositions necessary to: Teach art in P-12 settings, thus responding to Georgia’s need for quality art education teachers; Become a highly qualified Level-5 certified art teacher in the State of Georgia by developing in-depth knowledge of comprehensive art education beyond with undergraduate level in the skill areas of production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics; and Develop professional leadership to advocate for the use of the visual arts in classroom, school, or community settings. Standards This program is aligned with the following: the five standards defined by the National Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) as recognized in Rule 505-3-.11 Art Education Programs in the State of Georgia (http://www.gapsc.com/TeacherEducation/Rules/505-3.11.pdf); the National Art Education Association (NAEA) six skill area standards, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/Professional Standards Commission (NCATE/ PSC), the core propositions identified in the National Board for Professional Teaching (NBPT) Standards, Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) standards are included to address the needs of children with exceptionalities, and the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum. The program is aligned with the following Kennesaw State University Strategic Plan 2007-2012 goals: Goal 1 Goal 4 Action Step 8. Add degree programs that are strategically important to the local community, to Georgia, and to the nation at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; Action Step 10. Increase the proportion of courses and programs that are offered off-site and online. Action Step 4. Increase percentage of students participating in internships, cooperative programs, and other career exploration opportunities. Justification This program is primarily designed for art teachers working under provisional certification, recent art major graduates with BFA, BA or BS degrees who wish to become teachers, or for mid-career art professionals seeking initial teacher certification. Designed as a summer intensive program, course work will also involve web-based instruction and/or weekly sessions on Saturday during the 2/6/2016 1 fall/spring academic calendar. Practicum experiences will be facilitated at the candidate’s working environment, thereby avoiding conflicts with school/work schedules. Uniqueness Currently, within the Northwest Georgia Crescent served by Kennesaw State University a program similar to the proposed MAT Art does not exist. This program will offer students who have completed a BFA, BA or BS in art an opportunity to transition into the field of art education with confidence that their certification expectations can and will be fulfilled while maintaining their present employment. The proposed program builds upon the mission of Kennesaw State University in the following competencies: Strong dedication toward service and applied scholarship Focus on student success Substantive commitment to collaborate within the university and with others outside the university High quality of the KSU professional degree programs (evidenced by NASAD and NCATE/PSC evaluation) Focus on special populations (including multicultural, cross-cultural and exceptional education strategies) Substantive commitment to the Northwest Georgia Crescent (for those seeking certification through provisional status as well as to the public/private school administrations that hire such individuals). Placement The program will be a collaborative program between the College of the Arts Department of Visual Arts and the Bagwell College of Education.
