KSU Master of Arts in Teaching Programs MASTER OF THE ART OF TEACHING (MAT) ART EDUCATION Purpose The proposed Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Art Education program is designed to prepare candidates with the knowledge, competency, and dispositions necessary to: Teach art in P-12 settings Become a highly qualified Level-5 certified art teacher in the State of Georgia Develop in-depth knowledge of comprehensive art education beyond with undergraduate level in the skill areas of production, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics and Develop professional leadership to advocate for the use of the visual arts in classroom, school, or community settings. Standards This program is aligned with the six skills areas defined by the National Art Education Association (NAEA) Standards. These standards serve as the foundation for the primary objectives of the program (For a complete example see “Advancing Art Education” at http://www.naea-reston.org/pubs_policy.html). NAEA guidelines are recognized by and aligned with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) Standards (http://nasad.arts-accredit.org/site/docs/Handbook/NASAD_%20HANDBOOK20072008.pdf), National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education/Professional Standards Commission (NCATE/PSC) Standards, and the core propositions identified by the National Board for Professional Teaching (NBPT) Standards. Additionally, standards from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) are included addressing the needs of children with exceptionalities. The six skills areas defined by the NAEA Standards include: Content in art Knowledge of students Curriculum development Instruction Assessment in art education and Professional responsibility (NAEA, 2001). The program is aligned with the following University System of Georgia/Board of Regents goals as presented on May 19, 2004 as the 2002-2007 Strategic Plan Reformulation (http://www.usg.edu/regents/strategic/strategic_plan.pdf): 2/6/2016 1 The proposed program is particularly closely aligned with the following University System of Georgia/Board of Regents strategic goals: Goal 1 Educate graduates who are intellectually and ethically informed individuals with well-defined skills and knowledge who are capable leaders, creative thinkers, and contributing citizens; Goal 2 Expand participation by increasing access, enhancing diversity, improving service to nontraditional students, expanding use of distance education, advancing public library usage, and marketing the advantages of postsecondary education; Goal 5 Help accelerate Georgia’s economic development by providing needed graduates, offering appropriate academic programs, and marketing of the System and its institutions. Justification This program is primarily designed for art teachers working under provisional certification who are required to obtain initial certification in art education within three to five years. Designed as a summer intensive program, course work will also involve webbased instruction and/or weekly sessions on Saturday during the fall/spring academic calendar. Practicum experiences will be facilitated at the candidate’s working environment, thereby avoiding conflicts with school/work schedules. Uniqueness Currently, within the Northwest Georgia Crescent served by Kennesaw State University a program similar to the proposed MAT Art Education does not exist. This program will offer students who have completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts, the professional undergraduate education degree in art, or a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree with a major in visual art or art education with demonstrated expertise within the field evidenced through a portfolio review process with an opportunity to transition into the field of art education with confidence that their certification expectations can and will be fulfilled while maintaining their present employment. The proposed program builds upon the mission of Kennesaw State University in the following competencies: Strong dedication toward service and applied scholarship Focus on student success Substantive commitment to collaborate within the university and with others outside the university High quality of the KSU professional degree programs (evidenced by NASAD and NCATE/PSC evaluation) Focus on special populations (including multicultural, cross-cultural and exceptional education strategies) Substantive commitment to the Northwest Georgia Crescent (for those seeking certification through provisional status as well as to the public/private school administrations that hire such individuals). 2/6/2016 2 Placement The program will be a collaborative program between the College of the Arts Department of Visual Arts and the Bagwell College of Education. Admission to Candidacy – for individuals who possess a bachelor’s degree in the content area or related field from an accredited institution, have submitted and passed the portfolio review process, who have completed pre-requisite coursework, who possess an adjusted GPA of 2.75 in courses related to the major, and who have passed the GACE I and II tests. The admission process will be competitive, limiting each content area cohort to 12 candidates. Applications will be evaluated based upon the extent to which they meet or exceed the admissions criteria. An MAT Admissions Committee will make the final decisions for acceptance.
