Global Scholars Program

RE:
You can be more than just an SNC student…You can be a Global Scholar!
Have you ever wanted to study or travel abroad?
Learn about other cultures, religions, languages, or
people? Complete a service-learning project? Make
your degree stand out from the other graduates? If so,
the GLOBAL SCHOLAR PROGRAM is for you!
The goal of the Global Scholar program is to create
global citizens who are “culturally sensitive and politically, socially, and intellectually motivated and engaged” (CISLA).
The program opens up opportunities for individual growth; recognizes the increasingly diversified country and world in
which we live; and gives students the opportunity to study, live, and work abroad.
In January 2009, SNC approved a unique interdisciplinary program in which you can integrate an international studies
component into any major offered by SNC. Do you want to learn about sustainable community-based resource
management around the game parks of South Africa, work on digital media campaigns for the World Cup, study the
music of West Africa or the history of Ankor Wat in Cambodia or Shakespeare’s sonnets and life in England, or have the
opportunity to care for animals orphaned at the hands of poachers? If so, the GLOBAL SCHOLAR program is the way
to do it all.
To earn the Global Scholar designation, you will need to complete a prescribed set of courses totaling at least 18
credits. You will also have to complete a senior project (thesis, show, major capstone, etc.) that integrates your
international studies with your major. Ideally, you will intern, travel, or study abroad for at least three weeks allowing
you to integrate this learning experience into your senior project.
The Global Scholar program is open to all SNC students who have an interest in learning more about the increasingly
globalized world in which they live. To ensure everyone that is interested has the opportunity to participate, you will be
asked to formally apply to the program and indicate how you plan to link this Global Scholar studies with your major.
The application for the Program is attached. Ideally, students will begin thinking about adding a Global Scholar
component to their major in their freshmen/sophomore years and would begin taking the required courses early in their
junior year.
An introductory briefing on the Global Scholar Program will be held on March 30 at 6:30 pm in Patterson Hall. If you
have any questions before then, please contact Global Scholar Program Chair Mary Lewellen
(mlewellen@sierranevada.edu or mllafrica@aol.com) or David Astles (dastles@sierranevada.edu).
So take a look, ask questions, and make your degree stand out from the other graduates…become a Global Scholar!
