Faculty Mentoring Faculty The Faculty Mentoring Faculty program will initially consist of a pairing of ECC math faculty, but could be opened eventually to faculty from any department and division. The pairing will span a single semester. Any current faculty member (adjunct, full-time non-tenured, or full-time tenured) is welcome to request participation as a mentee, though all new adjunct hires are strongly encouraged to participate (see below for details). Purpose The Faculty Mentoring Faculty program is designed as a safe environment for new and experienced faculty to grow in their practice. While the program does place a certain emphasis on new hires – particularly those who are new to community college teaching – the program is open to any math faculty member who is looking to improve his or her instructional practices, assessment techniques, or just to get feedback from an impartial colleague outside of the high-stakes classroom observation process. Mentors will be available to guide mentees through some of the logistical components of teaching at ECC, but the primary focus of the mentorship will be the classroom. For more details of the program specifics, see the following page. Selection of Mentors Similar to the selection of those performing classroom observations, the dean shall request from the Instructional Coordinator a list of qualified faculty to serve as mentors. The list may be drawn from UAF II or full-time faculty within the discipline or a related discipline. The deans shall assign mentors from that list. (See Section 10.5 of the 2014-2016 ECCFA-BOT contract for similar language regarding classroom observations.) Mentors may only mentor one individual at a time. At the dean’s discretion, mentors may simultaneously participate as mentees. Confidentiality Confidentiality is key to the mentor program. Details of meeting times will be included in the Mentoring Checklist to be submitted to the dean, but no details regarding the discussions or observations will be provided to the dean or the individual performing the classroom observation. Mentors may not also perform classroom observations of their mentees during the semester of mentorship. Match Details The mentorship will span a single semester (Fall or Spring). It will consist of 6 meetings, designated as follows: 1. The mentor contacts the mentee to set up an initial meeting. During this meeting, the mentor and mentee create a set of goals for the mentorship. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 3rd week of the semester. 2. The mentor observes the classroom of mentee, possibly using the Classroom Observation Form as an outline. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 5th week of the semester. 3. Mentor and mentee meet to reflect on the classroom observation and create an Action Plan. Guidance will be provided by the mentor regarding areas of strength and areas needing improvement. Suggestions will be given regarding what to look for in the upcoming observation. This meeting should also include a discussion of the mentee’s student assessments, including the assigning of course grades and whether they accurately assess the course’s learning objectives as outlined in the official course outline. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 7th week of the semester. 4. The mentee observes the classroom of the mentor. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 10th week of the semester. 5. The mentor observes the classroom of the mentee a second time. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 13th week of the semester. 6. Mentor and mentee meet again to discuss the classroom visits, possibly revising the Action Plan. Guidance should also be provided by the mentor regarding end-of-semester activities, including any final exams and assigning course grades. This meeting should also include setting goals for the following semester. Recommended timeline: Complete by the end of the 15th week of the semester. At the conclusion of the mentorship, the mentor and mentee submit the Mentoring Checklist to the dean in order to receive compensation. Total time expectation: 6 hours Compensation: Mentees: 6 hours @ $28/hr = $168 Mentor: 6 hours @ $50/hr = $300
