Directions for the Student
Course Selection
Exchange students must complete this form in order to receive transfer credit and to determine UK course
equivalencies. List the exchange course name, number, UK equivilant course name, number, and credit hours
for each course you might take at the host institution as described in the host college catalog. You should
select at least twice as many courses as you plan to take on exchange and list courses for the entire period of
your exchange not just for your first term. For each course selected from host institution, attach a copy of the
course description. With the help of your academic advisor, indicate how each course will be accepted (e.g.,
major requirement, major elective, elective, core requirement). If the course will replace a Major course,
indicate the course that will be replaced. Secure the signatures of your academic advisor and other individuals
as directed by the NSE coordinator. Sign the form and return it to the campus NSE office prior to exchange.
UK Course Equivalency Approval (Please make a copy of page 2 as needed and attach to final submission)
If you come across a course of interest at your host instititon that does not already have UK equivalency, work
with your academic advisor to have this course reviewed to ensure it satisfies your academic needs. Courses
transferring from a quarter calendar to a semester calendar generally earn one-third less value than
semester credit hours. Courses transferring from a semester calendar to a quarter calendar will generally
earn one third more value than quarter credit hours. Fractions of hours may be rounded up or rounded down
as deemed appropriate by institutional policy. A full-year exchange is strongly encouraged when moving
between the two calendars.
NOTE: You are urged to include several alternate courses on this form, in case you are unable to take
your selected courses while on exchange. Access to courses at your host campus is based on offerings
and availability and cannot be guaranteed. You must meet all pre-requisites or co-requisites as required by the
host campus. See Important Information on page 4.
A final copy of this signed agreement will be kept by the student, academic advior, host NSE coordinator, and in the student’s
permanent file in home campus NSE office.

* Conditional Approval: Upon return, students must bring course syllabus and completed assignments to department for final approval.
Departments may stipulate other conditions at their discretion. Student are incouraged to get stipulations and requirments for course approval in writing
from academic department pior to leaving on exchange. Final approval must be optained from respective academic department prior to submitting
transcript for processing. Failure to obtain approval may cause select couses(s) to not satisfy depertment requirements.
Important Information: Students must submit this form 1 month or at the latest 2 weeks before departure.
The above course equivalencies will be used by National Student Exchange at UK, the student’s college, and UK
Registrar to place credit on the student’s UK transcript from academic work completed on exchange. Grades received for
these courses will be translated into UK’s letter grading system and will be noted on the student’s academic record, but as
transfer credit, these courses will generate “earned hours” only, which are not factored into the student’s UK GPA. Foreign
transcripts are analyzed by a country-specific formula.
Students should first consult with their academic advisor about their exchange, taking along academic program information,
printed course descriptions and any other available information. After consulting with their academic advisor and selecting
their courses, students should take the course information for each exchange course to the UK department from which they
wish to receive equivalency approval. Once all approvals or conditional approvals have been acquired, the student
should make two copies of the completed form, take both the original and the copies to their academic advisor for
signature, leave one copy with their academic advisor, submit the original signed copy by Academic Advisor to the
National Student Exchange at 109 Miller Hall, and keep one copy for their records.
If for some reason this advising agreement need to be amended prior or during exchange, the student should contact their
home campus academic advisor in consultation with their home NSE Coordinator to review transfer equivilancy and major
requirements. Students are recommended to keep all course materials, assignments and other information from their
exchange, in case there are any questions about credit and equivalencies. Students with conditional approval are
required to return with this documentation and should therefore consider making copies for safekeeping during their
travels.
