NINTH GRADE PLACEMENT CHART “Staying on track for graduation” Cobb County School District Spring, 2010 Page 1 of 5 Spring, 2010 Cobb County School District Middle and High School Language Arts The chart below should be used to determine high school placement for the 2010-2011 school year. Four units of credit in English Language Arts shall be required of all students. A full unit of credit in Ninth Grade Literature/Composition and a full unit of credit in American Literature/Composition are required by the State of Georgia. High School Diploma Eighth Grade Language Arts Ninth Grade Language Arts Teacher Recommendation of highly motivated and/or highly able students Ninth Grade Lit/Composition (Honors) Teacher Recommendation Ninth Grade Lit/Composition Require Credit: Ninth Grade Lit/Composition (Honors) or NinthGrade Lit/Composition are acceptable. An End of Course Test (EOCT) is required for either course and will count 15% of the final grade. Students Reading Below Grade level Eighth Grade Language Arts Teacher Recommendation Students who score at or below the 25 percentile on the ITBS and who are reading below seventh grade level as documented by another reading assessment may be required to take Current Topics I in addition to their English class. Ninth Grade Language Arts Elective scaffold courses: (Block schools should offer first semester) Communication Skills** Or Current topics I** (Read 180 if available) (ESOL if available) AND Ninth Grade Lit/Composition (Block schools should offer second semester) required **Counts as elective credit only. If Communication Skills or Current Topics are not offered, Ninth Grade Lit/Composition is the appropriate placement. EIGHTH GRADE MATHEMATICS CRITERIA Final Average is 85% or above AND Passes Math I EOCT Student has completed Accelerated Mathematics 1 (Numeric grade is recorded on middle school report card) Final Average is 70 % to 84% OR Fails Math I EOCT Final Average is below 70% NINTH GRADE PLACEMENT Accelerated Mathematics 2 Accelerated Mathematics 1 grade will be recorded as a “P” on high school transcript and will not be calculated into GPA Mathematics 2 Accelerated Mathematics 1 grade will be recorded as a “P” on high school transcript and will not be calculated into GPA Mathematics 1 Eighth grade math unit test average is above 85% AND Student has completed eighth grade mathematics Exceeds Standards on eighth grade CRCT Eighth grade math unit test average is 84% or below OR Accelerated Mathematics 1 Mathematics 1 Meets Standards on eighth grade CRCT Final Average is below 70% AND/OR Mathematics 1 and Mathematics Support Course Does Not Meet Standards on eighth grade CRCT Page 3 of 5 Spring, 2010 Cobb County School District Middle and High School Foreign Language The chart below should be used to determine high school placement for the 2010-2011 school year. For Students Enrolled in Middle School Foreign Language Middle School Foreign Language Ninth Grade Placement Completed the regular middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade * Continue in level II of the same language and/or begin a new Language Did not complete the regular middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade * Repeat language in ninth grade or begin a new language (Option: Postpone repeating language studied in middle school until tenth grade) Completed the one year extended day middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade * Continue in level II of the same language and/or begin a new language.* Those students who studied two languages in middle school, one during school hours or one extended day, should continue in level II of one or more of these languages* Did not complete the one-year extended day middle foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade ** Repeat language in ninth grade or begin a new language (Option: Postpone foreign language study until tenth grade) For Students Not Enrolled in Middle School Foreign Language Eighth Grade Language Arts A, B or C average recommended Ninth Grade Placement Enroll in level I of any foreign language offered A minimum of two years of the same foreign language is required for admission to colleges in the University System of Georgia as well as most universities outside the state of Georgia. Each college has its own set of criteria for admission. Students are encouraged to research the admissions criteria for all colleges they are planning to attend to ensure that they will have the requisite amount of foreign language credit. To be well prepared for colleges that require foreign language, high school students are highly encouraged to take four years of language study by completing four years of study in one foreign language or two years of one language and two years in a second foreign language. Successful completion of either the regular middle school foreign language program or the extended day program is equivalent of one year of high school credit. * Numeric grade is recorded at the eighth grade and changed to a “P” for passing on high school transcript. Eighth Grade Social Studies Ninth Grade Placement An A average at end of second grading period and at time of registration and/or Teacher recommendation World Geography, Honors World Geography, AP Human Geography or Pre-AP Social Studies All other students World Geography or Leadership (if offered) Three (3) credits of social studies are required for graduation for freshman beginning with the school year 2008-2009. All students must take and pass World History (1 credit), United States History (1 credit), Economics (1/2 credit), and American Government (1/2 credit). Page 5 of 5
