College Preparatory Diploma Eighth Grade Language Arts Ninth Grade Language Arts Teacher Recommendation of highly motivated and/or highly able students 9th Grade Lit/Composition (Honors) B average* or below and Teacher Recommendation 9th Grade Lit/Composition For the college prep diploma, only Ninth Lit/Composition (Honors) or Ninth Lit/Composition are acceptable. These courses require an End of Course Test (EOCT). Spring 2007 Technical Career Diploma Eighth Grade Language Arts Teacher Recommendation B average* or below and Teacher Recommendation Ninth Grade Language Arts Ninth Grade Lit/Composition (necessary for College Prep diploma) or **Communication Skills or Current Topics Ninth Grade Lit/Composition or **Communication Skills or Current Topics *Figured by using average of grading periods prior to registration. **Counts as elective credit only. If Communication Skills or Current Topics are not offered, Ninth Grade Lit/Composition is the appropriate placement. Students who score at or below the 25% on the ITBS and who are reading below seventh grade level as documented by another reading assessment may be required to take Current Topics in Reading in addition to their English class. Eighth Grade Math Grade 90 – 100 Algebra II Honors (recommended) The honors program is the most rigorous and should be assigned to students who want to participate in the Advanced Placement Calculus and/or Advanced Placement Statistics program and have maintained strong Geometry and/or Algebra I grades. Student has successfully completed Geometry Student has successfully completed Algebra I Ninth Grade Placement 70-89 Algebra II (recommended) 90 – 100 Euclidean Geometry Honors (recommended) The honors program is the most rigorous and should be assigned to students who want to participate in the Advanced Placement Calculus and/or Advanced Placement Statistics program and have maintained strong Algebra I grades. Student has completed Beginning Algebra and Geometry 70-89 Euclidean Geometry (recommended) 50% - 100% Cobb County Algebra Placement test score and 70 - 100 average on 8th grade math unit tests Algebra I (or Algebra I Part I for block high schools that teach Algebra I in two semesters) <50% Cobb County Algebra Placement test score or <70 average on 8th grade math unit tests Recommended Integrated Math I (option to be placed in <50% Cobb County Algebra Placement test score and <70 average on 8th grade math unit tests Algebra I with teacher recommendation) Integrated Math I (Fundamental skill and concept recovery program) The Cobb County Algebra Placement test should be given to all Integrated Math students as well as to freshmen students new to the district to verify placement. For Students Enrolled in Middle School Foreign Language Middle School Foreign Language Ninth Grade Placement Complete the regular middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade ** Continue in level II of the same language and/or begin a new language* Did not complete the regular middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade ** Repeat language in ninth grade or begin a new language* (Option: Postpone repeating language studied in middle school until tenth grade) Complete the one year extended day middle school foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade ** Continue in level II of the same language and/or begin a new language.* Those students who studied two languages in middle school, one during school hours or one extended day, should continue in level II of one or more of these languages* Did not complete the one-year extended day middle foreign language program with a final grade of P for “passing” in eighth grade ** Repeat language in ninth grade or begin a new language* (Option: Postpone foreign language study until tenth grade) For Students Not Enrolled in Middle School Foreign Language Eighth Grade Language Arts A, B or C average recommended Ninth Grade Placement Enroll in level I of any foreign language offered A minimum of two years of the same language at the high school level is required to earn a college preparatory diploma. Successful completion of either the regular middle school foreign language program or the extended day program is equivalent of one year of high school credit. Foreign language is not required for the technical career diploma. Foreign language is required for admission to colleges in the University System of Georgia. To be well prepared, high school students are highly encouraged to take four years of language study by completing four years of study in one foreign language or two years of one language and two years in a second foreign language. * Two years of the same language are required in order to earn a college preparatory diploma; therefore, students should earn two units of the same language before selecting a second foreign language for additional studies. **Numeric grade is recorded at the eighth grade and changed to a “P” for passing on high school transcript. Eighth Grade Math and Science Suggested Ninth Grade Placement (Varies by School) Completed Algebra I and/or science with 80-100 Biology Honors or Physical Science Honors All other students Biology, Physical Science or Conceptual Physics Spring 2007 Cobb County School District Middle and High School Social Studies The chart below should be used to determine high school placement for the 2007-2008 school year. Eighth Grade Social Studies Ninth Grade Placement An A average at end of second grading period and at time of registration and/or Teacher recommendation World Geography 91 or Pre-AP Social Studies (If World Geography 91 is not offered, World Geography 92 is the next appropriate placement.) All other students World Geography 92 Three (3) units of social studies are required for graduation. One (1) of these units is specified by the State Board of Education as “World Studies.” This requirement may be met by successfully completing one (1) unit of World Geography, or one (1) unit of World History, or one-half (½ unit) of World Geography and one-half (½) unit of World History. World Geography is open to students in grades nine through twelve. One (1) unit of World History is required for the College Prep Diploma. Spring 2007 Page 5 of 5
