2009 Dual Degree Program Structure
Please ensure that you read and understand the following important information about your program.
The Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Education (Secondary) program prepares students to teach in secondary
schools with content knowledge of two specialist teaching areas as well as practical teaching skills and experience.
It is your responsibility to ensure that you complete the requirements for each section of your program in order to
graduate with both degrees. The following information is designed to help you plan your enrolment to meet this goal.
You are strongly advised to download official rules and course lists under the Information for Current Students link for

You are not required to submit this program plan for approval. However, if you have any concerns about meeting degree
requirements, especially when nearing the end of your program, please contact the relevant Faculty for advice. For
advice on the BCom section of your degree, including advice on majors and courses, please contact the Faculty of
Business, Economics and Law. For advice on the BEd (Sec) section of your degree, including information on teaching
area requirements, please contact the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences or the School of Education.
PROGRAM GUIDELINES
The Bachelor of Commerce / Bachelor of Education (Secondary) dual degree program consists of two parts, the
requirements for the Bachelor of Commerce degree and the requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
degree. The Bachelor of Commerce provides the content knowledge for two curriculum areas offered in schools, whilst
the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) provides the skills, knowledge and practical experience required for teacher
registration and employment.
Students are required to obtain two Specialist Teaching Areas. The Bachelor of Commerce provides the following
specialist teaching area options: BOM and Accounting OR BOM and IPT.
Please note if you are admitted into this dual degree program mid-year or obtain partial credit you will need to ensure
that you structure your program so that you are able to enter the final year of Bachelor of Education component in
semester one – the final year of the BEd (Sec) program is a year-long professional year commencing in semester 1 only.

You must complete a total of #68 for the program.
Bachelor of Commerce Section Requirements:

#36 from the BCom List including –
 #24 of compulsory courses from Group 1; and
 #12 from one major in Group 2 (#6 must be at level 3); or
 #12 of elective courses from Group 3 (#6 must be at level 3, and only #2 may be at level 1).
Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Section Requirements:

#32 from the BEd(Sec) List including –
 #8 units for Part A compulsory;
 #4 Electives List 1
 #4 Electives List 2
 #16 in accordance with Part B

The Professional (final) Year of the program must be taken full-time* and can only be commenced when all BCom
and BEd(Sec) Part A requirements have been met.
* The Director of Teacher Education may approve part time study under special, and very specific, conditions.

scheduling can change from year to year. You are advised to check the scheduling for the current year and contact the
relevant Faculty for advice if course scheduling has changed.
