PROPOSED CHANGES TO HSU POLICY: Information for Parents Overview: The HSU Advisory Board, which consists of an administrator, department chairs, a parent, and a student representative, has proposed changes to the HSU Policy, as specified in the table below. The HSU Advisory Committee will request that these changes take effect in fall 2012 and apply to the class of [2014????] and subsequent classes.??? Component 2010 Policy Proposed Revision, 2012 Graduation requirements World Languages 9th grade HSU Common Course: Leadership Dynamics Capstone Project University Preparation Complete the pre-college graduation requirements shown below: English: 4 credits Math (Alg I, Alg II, Geometry, or more advanced math courses: 4 credits Science (Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, and/or Physics): 3 credits Social Studies (World Civ., U.S. History, and a course in one of the following: Govt., Geography, or Economics: 3 credits Health and PE (½ credit of Health, ½ credit of PE): 1 credit total Technology competency*: 1 credit (see requirements p. 2) Students will complete three credits in one language other than English. Four credits are highly recommended. All HSU 9th graders are required to take this course. Students will complete a capstone project. This project will be completed in a 12th-grade, HSUHumanities course. Students who meet the state Humanities requirement in other ways will be responsible for completing the capstone project independently. In order to prepare students to meet the college readiness requirement below, in 2010-2011, 2 math and 2 English classes will offer the College Board's Springboard curriculum as a pilot program. If judged successful from feedback and data, the SBDM committee will decide whether to expand the Springboard offerings or choose other curricula. Students must achieve the college ready benchmarks on the ACT PLAN Test; if the benchmarks are not achieved then students must complete a supplementary ACT prep program. 1 All Students will demonstrate that they are ready for post-secondary study by completing 4 units of AP or dual-credit courses. Technology competency* Humanities Students MUST select at least one of the following paths; however students are encouraged to complete both paths A and B to be College and Career Ready. A. Students will demonstrate that they are ready for intensive postsecondary study by successfully completing at least 4.0 credits of Advanced Placement or dual credit (students should enroll in AP courses that meet the career and education goals identified on their ILP) B. Students will complete at least one AP/Dual Credit course and demonstrate that they are career ready by completing one of the school-approved four-course pathways –a four-course sequence that meets state career-ready standards (approved pathways attached as separate document) Students will complete 1 credit in technology Students must demonstrate fluency. This requirement may be met by the IC3 performance-based competency in Computer Applications course. Students who pass technology. Policies must have two readings before they may be approved. The HSU Advisory Committee may request that the council hold a special-called meeting for a second read and council vote on the policy. SBDM Council meetings are open to the public.
