TESOL Advising for spring semester 2010
Update: November 11, 2009
TESOL advising is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 – 5:00 p.m., at the Language Resource
Center (LRC), 321 Graff. Look for me in the lounge area near the LRC entrance or inside at a computer.
This advising page was originally posted on November 2, 2009. Revisions about registration for CI 463 (added on 11/11/2009)
are highlighted in blue.
Core Courses: 16 credits
All of the core courses are offered during the spring 2010 semester: ENG 332, ENG 432, TSL 450, TSL 400, and CI
463/563.
The following core courses will be offered in the fall 2010 semester: ENG 332 and TSL 450.
ENG 332 Modern English Grammars.
The English Department usually offers ENG 332 in both fall and spring semesters. Plan to take this course before you
take ENG 432 Introduction to Linguistics.
ENG 432/532 Introduction to Linguistics.
ENG 432 is regularly offered during spring semesters but not during fall semesters. The prerequisite for the course is
ENG 332 or the completion of a 202-level foreign language class. Even if you have completed a 202-level foreign
language course, however, I recommend that you complete ENG 332 before ENG 432.
TSL 450/550 TESOL Internship
o You may take 1 – 4 internships credits per semester. 1 credit represents approximately 25 hours work in the field
of TESOL.
o With the new TESOL curriculum, you will need four internship credits. You will need to complete two of the
internship credits working with the ESL 153 U.S. Culture class that meets during the fall semester only,
2:15 – 3:40 p.m., Tuesday/Thursday. (Students who took TSL 300, from the previous catalog, have already
fulfilled the requirement to work with ESL 153 students as part of the TESOL curriculum.)
o The four-credit internship requirement applies to students in all catalogs, with the exception of those who are near
completion of the TESOL curriculum as described in the 2007 catalog.
o We expect to have many internship opportunities at the UWL ESL Institute during the spring 2010. ESL Institute
internship applications are due by December 4.
o Internship application forms for the ESL Institute are posted on the TESOL advising website. You will need to
complete this application for all positions in the ESL Institute.
o Michelle Tyvoll (our ESL Institute Director) will contact students about internship appointments by December
14.
o After you are accepted for an ESL Institute internship, you will need to complete the necessary paperwork for
registration through the Career Services office in Cartwright Center.
o You may complete two of the four required internship credits outside the ESL Institute. In January 2010, we will
have presentations about summer internships in Italy and in the state of Puebla, Mexico. You can also arrange an
internship with an area organization that offers a working environment in which you interact with English
language learners. TESOL students have completed internships with the UWL Multicultural Student Services,
the UWL Writing Center, the Western Technical College GOAL program, and an after-school program at a local
middle school.
TSL 400 (MLG 555) Program Models for Second Language Acquisition.
o TSL 400 (MLG 555) is offered only during spring semesters.
o We will no longer offer TSL 300 Introduction to TESOL. In its place, TESOL students will take Program
Models for Second Language Acquisition. Students who completed TSL 300 or MLG 455/555 (TESOL
Programs for Second Language Acquisition, summer 2008 or spring 2009) have fulfilled the TSL 400
requirement.
o Junior status or higher will be required for registration in this course in spring 2010. Prerequisites for TSL
400/500 are admission to teacher education or completion of the INS 250/251/252 study abroad series or one
course from the following: ANT 350; CST 332; MLG 309; ENG 332, 334, 432; PHL 311; PSY 282, 360, 436;
TSL 425.
C-I 463/563 TESOL Methods.
o C-I 463/563 is offered only during spring semesters.
o Prerequisites for C-I 463 are TSL 400 (or TSL 300 or MLG 455/555 from summer 2008 or spring 2009), TSL
450 (at least 1 credit), and six credits from the following: ANT 350; ENG 332, 334, 432; CST 332; MLG 309;
PHL 311; PSY 282, 360, 436; SPE 431; TSL 425.
o Because of the change in course numbers, you may not be able to register for CI 463 online. If you have
completed the prerequisites, I will be able to register students for the course during the week of December 4. To
request registration, please email me by December 4.
 Subject line: CI 463 registration request
 List the course number and the semester for each prerequisite that you have fulfilled, e.g. “MLG
455, summer 2008; TSL 450 spring 2009, fall 2009; ENG 332 fall 2009; PSY 282 fall 2009.”
Electives: 9 credits from three or more departments.
Courses used for general education will not apply to the TESOL minor.
Education majors in French/German/Spanish, EC-A certification track: You are required to take EDS 308
Foundations of Literacy, which is offered during both the fall and spring semesters. If you are graduating in 2010 or
later, this is a new requirement for adding EC-A ESL certification to your EC-A FRE/GER/SPA certification. You
will also need to take one course from the language studies list and one course from the cultural studies list.
All other TESOL minors: one course from language studies; one course from cultural studies; and 3 credits from
