October 27, 2011
Revised on November 2, 2011
Please note that March 2011 revisions to the TESOL minor are retroactive; i.e., they are applicable for students in all catalogs.
Significant changes from the fall 2011 advising letter are highlighted in blue.
TESOL coordinator Janis Hanson, 1209 Centennial, is available for walk-in TESOL advising during her regular office hours,
10:15 – 11:15 a.m., Monday – Thursday. Additional walk-in advising will be available 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on
Wednesday, Nov. 2; Thursday, Nov. 3; Tuesday, Nov. 8; and Wednesday, Nov. 9. Please contact Ms. Hanson at
hanson.jani@uwlax.edu if you need to meet with her outside of these advising hours or if you find errors or omissions in the
advising information below.
TESOL is a 25-credit minor, which includes 19 credits for the core and 6 elective credits.
For education majors in French, German and Spanish (EC – A licensure track), a 27-credit TESOL minor includes 19
credits for the core and two additional EDS courses: 308 & 412.
Core Courses: 19 credits
All of the core courses are offered during the spring 2012 semester.
ENG 332 Modern English Grammars (3 credits)
The English Department usually offers ENG 332 in both fall and spring semesters. Register for this course as early as you
can because it tends to fill quickly. Plan to take this course before you take ENG 432 Introduction to Linguistics.
Prerequisite: one 200-level ENG course for 3 credits.
ENG 334 Language Studies for Teachers (3 credits)
The English Department usually offers ENG 334 in both fall and spring semesters. Prerequisite: one 200-level ENG course
for 3 credits.
ENG 432 Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits)
ENG 432 is offered during spring semesters but not during fall semesters. The prerequisite for the course is ENG 332 or the
completion of a 202-level foreign language class. Even if you have completed a 202-level foreign language course, however,
we recommend that you complete ENG 332 before ENG 432.
TESOL students who plan to graduate in May or December 2012, or student teach in spring 2013, may pre-register for ENG
432. To preregister for this class, please bring your AR to the walk-in TESOL advising scheduled during the week of Oct.
31: 10:15 – 11:15 a.m. on Monday (10/31) and Tuesday (11/1); or 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday (11/2) and
Thursday (11/3), 10:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
TSL 400 Program Models for Second Language Acquisition (3 credits)
TSL 400 is offered in both fall and spring semesters. The prerequisite is admission to teacher education or completion of the
INS 250/251/252 study abroad series or one course from the following: ANT 350; CST 332; EDS 308, 309, 310, 351,
412; ENG 332, 330, 334, 337, 432, 434; PHL 311; PSY 282, 360, 436; SPA 460, 471; SPE 431; TSL 425.
TSL 450 TESOL Internship (4 credits for the minor, 1 – 4 credits/semester)
o Prerequisites: ENG 110 & CST 110.
o You may take 1 – 4 internships credits per semester. One credit represents 35 – 40 hours/semester. The majority of
TESOL minors work at the UWL ESL Institute for two or three semesters to complete the four internship credits.
o For two of the four internship credits, you are required to work with a designated ESL class during a fall or spring
semester. In the spring 2012 semester, there are two options for you to complete this requirement:
 You assist Janis Hanson in the ESL 150-level labs that meet 8:50 – 9:45 a.m., Monday – Thursday. You will
schedule one additional office hour per week.
 You Scott Reber in the ESL U.S. Culture class that meets Tuesday/Thursday, 2:15 – 3:40 p.m. The ESL
Institute will schedule two additional hours of service for you each week.
o You have a variety of options for the additional two TSL 450 credits required for the minor. The TESOL program
organizes one and two-credit internships at the UWL ESL Institute. TESOL students have also found opportunities to
earn internship credit through work and volunteer activities.
o Additional information about TSL 450 and the application for spring 2012 internships are available on the TESOL
advising page online. For all spring 2012 TESOL Internships, you will need to submit an application by December 2.
You need to register for spring courses before you apply for an internship inasmuch as your academic schedule will
determine your availability for specific internship placements.

