EAP 1141-L - Writing Level 1
Course Competencies:
Course Description: Students develop the ability to write
appropriate phrases and short sentences on personal topics. This
course supports the same competencies as those in EAP 1141.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Students place into this class after receiving an
appropriate score on the Michigan .
Co-requisite: EAP 1141
Competencies:
Competency 1: The student will produce basic sentences and phrases
on personal topics in order to develop writing fluency and vocabulary.
Competency 2: The student will write simple sentences appropriate to
the level in Standard English and attend to grammatical form and word
order.
Competency 3: The student will proofread and edit grammar and
sentence structure appropriate to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to
edit writing.
Teaching methods: video; class discussion; computer assisted learning; collaborative
activities; dictations; tapes and cds, lecture, other

Note: Writing labs are considered double-contact, which means that the same number of
class hours (48) should also be required in outside writing activities.

complete educational experience. Participation in this class is only possible if you attend

Absences: Students may be absent from one class with no penalties. Students who are

Students continue to develop writing skills in the context of guided discourse on personal
topics with an emphasis on logical thought and mechanics. This class supports the same
competencies which are covered in EAP 1241.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1141-L or equivalent
proficiency as determined by placement in Michigan.
Co-requisite: EAP 1241
Competency 1: The student will produce a series of related sentences
on personal topics with an emphasis on logical thought and the
development of writing fluency and vocabulary.
Competency 2: The student will write related simple and compound
sentences appropriate to the level in Standard English and attend to

Students develop the ability to write basic, structured academic paragraphs
on familiar topics and execute other academic writing tasks. This course
supports the same competencies as those in EAP 1341.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1241-L or equivalent proficiency
Co-requisite: EAP 1341
Competencies:
Competency 1: The student will produce basic, structured,
academic/expository paragraphs on familiar topics (e.g., narrative, descriptive,
definition, process) in order to develop writing fluency and vocabulary.
Competency 2: The student will write basic single paragraphs using simple,
compound, and complex sentences (with high frequency transition words) when
appropriate. The paragraphs will be organized and written with clarity,
substance, and Standard English appropriate to the level.
Competency 3: The student will proofread and edit grammar and sentence
structure appropriate to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to edit writing.
Competency 5: The student will use the basic functions of the computer as a
word processing tool.
Competency 6: The student will execute other academic writing tasks
including: factual short answer responses to test questions, brief outlines of text,
brief formal definitions of academic terms, and e-mail.

other academic writing tasks. This course supports the objectives
of EAP 1540.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1441-L or equivalent
proficiency as determined by appropriate score on Michigan.

Competency 1: The student will recognize and produce the types of
academic/expository paragraphs and essays that a writing task requires.
Competency 2: The student will plan and develop paragraphs and
essays (4 paragraphs) using a variety of sentence structures and
vocabulary appropriate to the level. The paragraphs and essays will be
written with clarity, coherence, substance and Standard English.
Competency 3: The student will proofread and edit grammar and
sentence structure appropriate to the level.
Competency 4: The student will use appropriate reference tools to edit
writing.

Students develop the ability to write a variety of college-level essays
with sophistication, fluency, and accuracy and execute other
academic writing tasks. This course supports the objectives of
EAP 1640.
3 credits
Prerequisites: Successful completion of EAP 1540-L or equivalent
proficiency as determined by placement score on Michigan.
Co-requisite: EAP 1640
Competencies:
Competency 1: The student will recognize and produce the type of
essay each writing task requires (including some discipline-specific
writing tasks as well as traditional English composition assignments).
Competency 2: The student will exhibit increased fluency in writing
and will plan and develop multi-paragraph essays (with some
including analysis, synthesis, evaluation, etc.) using a variety of
sentence structures and vocabulary, exhibiting clarity, coherence and
substance, and the application of Standard English conventions
appropriate to the level.
Competency 3: The student will proofread and edit written work
attending to grammar, mechanics, clarity, coherence, substance,
audience, and purpose, etc.
Competency 4: The student will gather information and integrate
sources in written work where appropriate.
Competency 5: The student will use reference tools to edit writing
and give credit to sources by using basic forms of citation.
Competency 6: The student will refine computer word processing

Note: Writing labs are considered double-contact, which means that the same number of
class hours (48) should also be required in outside writing activities. Skills Bank 4 is
installed in labs in room 6232 and 6237 for independent work in the labs. Grammar
Master & Expert Writing is installed in labs 6232, 6234, and 6237.
