Welcome to the Academic Systems Mathematics Courses While you will be receiving a general Academic Systems syllabus for your math course, below you will find information specific to your section of the class. Instructor: Steve Kinholt Office: SMT 334 Phone: (253) 833-9111 extension 4354 Office Hours: To Be Announced, but generally before and/or after class or arranged. Email: I prefer that you use my “regular” email address skinholt@greenriver.edu but you can also send messages within Academic Systems. Web Site: http://www.instruction.greenriver.edu/skinholt Mailbox: My mailbox is located on the third floor of SMT. See the secretary for access. Overview: This class is not a lecture course. Instead, it is a lab-based mathematics course that uses computer courseware called Academic Systems. This class covers Math 62, 70, 72, and 97 in a self-paced format where you’ll be learning via the computer (with help from a workbook, handouts, and lab instructors). You should make sure that this self-paced, computer version of the class will match your learning style. If not, a lecture course might be better for you. It is vital that you attend class during this first week to ensure that you are in the correct place, in the correct class, and have the correct materials. After the first week, you may choose to do your work according to a schedule that meets your needs. You may even be able to work from home over the Internet if you have the right connections. However, you will need to take tests on campus and you should always keep in contact with me. Your Grade: Your grade will be calculated from your test scores and homework. Only 5% of your final grade will be based on homework, and 95% of your grade will be the average of your tests (including the final exam). Homework Policy: You must submit written work for all the sections that are covered in the chapter test, prior to taking the test. Your homework is the Practice Evaluate in your PAN (workbook) and it can be found at the end of each section. (Exception: MATH 97 has printed homework packets). Your work should include the original problem (unless it’s a word problem or is too long) and the steps involved in the solution. Your homework needs to be done neatly. See Homework handout for more information about homework. Homework must include: o Your name o Section # and problem # labeled o Problem o Work shown o Answer (Boxed) You will receive credit for completed homework that includes the above guidelines. The answers to all assignments are available from any instructor in the IVC 102 lab. You are responsible for checking all the answers for the homework. Tests: Your tests may be taken when (you are ready) up to and including the day of the deadline. DO NOT miss these deadlines. You may take tests (including the final exam) early. I encourage you to do this so that you may take a re-test if needed. You need to take your tests during your scheduled class time. If an emergency comes up where you can not do this, please call or email me so we can schedule another time for the exam. I will grade your tests within one or two days after you complete the test. To find out your results, you may stop in the IVC 102 lab during class time or email me at the address given above. Your Progress: Please stay in touch with me throughout the quarter and let me know if you have questions, comments, and suggestions. I am here to help.
