College Credit Plus (cc+) 2015 - 2016 school year Marion Local High School 1 What is College Credit Plus?? Ohio’s new College Credit Plus (which combines the Post-Secondary and the dual enrollment programs) can help students earn college and high school credits at the same time by taking college courses from community colleges or universities. The purpose of this program is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options for students who are determined to be college ready. Participating in College Credit Plus is free, so there is no cost for tuition, books or fees. However, if you choose to attend a private college, you may have some costs. Any student in grades 7-12 can apply for College Credit Plus admission. You will be admitted based on your college-readiness in one or more subject areas. College Readiness can be determined in several ways, which will be discussed later in this handbook. High Schools are required to provide a Career Pathway with a college. A pathway is a course of study that leads to a degree. We have listed pathways for Edison State Community College & Wright State Lake Campus. (You can pick up a copy as you leave the meeting tonight.) If you choose to attend either of these schools, you are NOT required to do these Pathways. They are simply there if you choose. **College Credit Plus does not replace the requirements to earn a high school diploma. This includes earning 18 points on the graduation tests. Even if you are enrolled in college courses, you must take the end of course exams in English I & II, Algebra I and Geometry. You do not have to take end of course exams in Physical Science, American History & Government if you are enrolled in College Credit Plus courses for those subjects. The grades you receive at the end of the College Credit Plus Course will correspond with a point scale used for graduation requirements. **(This last paragraph is only applicable to students graduating in the class of 2018 and beyond.)** College 2 College Credit Plus Opportunities & Program Requirements 1. COST There is no cost (tuition, books, fees, etc.) to students for participating in CC+ at an Ohio Public University. (If you choose to attend a private institution, you may have to pay a fee.) Students will pay for classes that they fail (unless you are economically disadvantaged). Students must arrange for their own transportation to and from CC+ classes. 2. COUNSELING Students must attend an informational meeting about CC+ with the high school counselor. Partnered colleges will be in attendance. The meeting tonight (Feb. 17) will fulfill this requirement. If you choose to do CC+, you must attend a counseling session with an advisor at the college. All CC+ courses & grades will be listed on your high school transcript. 3. OPTIONS Students may earn high school credits through any combination of college classes and classes taken at the high school. Students may attend multiple colleges in one school year. Students may follow the listed pathways with the partnered institution; however, this is not required. See the complete list of available classes. You can view the college course catalogs for Wright State Lake Campus and Edison State at https://catalog.wright.edu/ or http://catalog.edisonohio.edu Students may take college classes at the university, on line, or at the high school (if available). 4. DEADLINES If you choose to participate in CC+, you must sign a letter of intent and statement of responsibility and turn it in to Mrs.Dippold by April 1. Students must fill out and submit an application to the college by the specified admission deadline as required by the college you are attending. 5. REQUIREMENTS Each college has its own admission requirements. 3 Admissions Standards and Procedures for Area Colleges in the College Credit Plus Program **Eligibility to participate in this program is showing that you are “college ready” in one or more subjects. Being “college ready” may vary from school to school. See below for basic guidelines from two colleges. Wright State (Celina) Contact Person: Mark Hibner 419-586-0377 To determine college readiness, you must have: o Wright State University is still finalizing their admissions criteria for College Credit Plus. It will likely include a combination of cumulative GPA, college readiness scores, an essay, or even a recommendation from a high school official. Fill out and submit application by the deadline. Take placement tests in math and English once admitted Must attend the college’s orientation and attend a counseling session with an academic advisor Edison (Piqua and Greenville) Contact Person: Velina Bogart 937-778-7854 To determine college readiness, you must have: o ACT scores of 22 (Math) and 18 (English), or o “college ready” scores on Edison’s Compass placement test. o There are other factors that may be considered as well such as GPA, teacher recommendation, etc.. These are determined by the college. Students who have previously participated in the PSEO program at ECC are required to re-apply each year by the deadline. Fill out and submit application by the deadline. Must attend the college’s orientation and attend a counseling session with an academic advisor *** If you choose to take classes from another college, you are responsible for finding the admission requirements, application deadline, etc.. *** 4 CC+ and Credits Students are permitted to earn a maximum of 30 semester hours through any combination of classes between the high school and college. All Marion Local students are required to take the equivalent of 6-8 high school credits per year. Credit Hour Conversion: Each 3 (or more) semester hour course = 1 high school credit Credit Hour Formula: 30 – (# of H.S. Credits x 3) = max # of eligible college semester hours you can take in a school year EXAMPLE: If a student is taking 4 credit hours at the high school, he/she would be eligible to take up to 18 (total) semester hours at college that year. 30 – (4 x 3) = 18 Does College Credit Transfer After Graduation? Thanks to Ohio’s Transfer to Degree Guarantee, many entry-level courses earned at an Ohio public college are guaranteed to transfer to any other Ohio public college. Credits earned at private colleges, or those that you want to transfer to an out-of-state institution will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the institution you are seeking to attend. Go to HTTPS://TRANSFERCREDIT.OHIO.GOV to learn more about credit transfer among the state’s non-public institutions of higher education. This tool allows you to find the best pathways to degree completion and launch successful careers! Earning college credit will not affect applications for financial aid/scholarships limited to entering freshmen. (*You will need an official college transcript to transfer credits to other colleges.) 5 Potential Risks of CC+ *** BIGGEST ISSUE *** Student cannot schedule the classes at their home school to work out with the classes they want at the college. Students receive their first low grade. *Keep in mind that your CC+ grade DOES count in your overall high school GPA. Interferes with extra-curricular activities Students can’t handle the school schedule with their work schedule. Students miss out on assemblies at their home school, social time, important announcements, etc. The class the student wants is full at the college. Transportation to and from class…..student did not think about the extra time this involves. Or, the student may not have a vehicle to get to/from classes. College courses move much faster than classes at the H.S. For example, a Calculus class at the H.S. is taught for 36 weeks. The same course at college is taught in about 15 weeks. At the H.S., you have contact with your teacher every day. In college, you may only see your professor 1-2 times a week. Benefits to CC+ Expanded curriculum offerings Opportunities to earn college credit while in high school Experiencing college level work Having a “change in pace” from a regular school day Earning college credit without having to pay for it. 6 What should I do now? CC+ Timeline & Responsibilities of the student: 1) Attend the mandatory meeting with Mrs. Dippold in February. The scheduled group meeting on Feb. 17th fulfills this requirement. 2) If you plan to participate in the College Credit Plus Program, you must notify Mrs.Dippold BY APRIL 1ST by signing and returning the “Intent to Participate” and the “Statement of Responsibility”. Mrs. Dippold will then give you an application to the college you have selected if it is available. Mrs. Dippold will discuss your high school classes to ensure that you have met all your requirements and are registered for the right amount of class time between your high school classes and college classes. 3) Apply to the college. *There is no application fee.* 4) Once accepted, contact the college to take your placement tests, if applicable, and/or meet with the CC+ advisor to schedule classes. Contact information: Edison: Velina Bogart 937-778-7854 Wright State: Mark Hibner 419-586-0377 5) ****Remember, your CC+ class schedule must work around your schedule at MLHS. We cannot guarantee that your CC+ classes will fit in with your classes here at Marion.**** You may not leave early or arrive late from classes at Marion. Your CC+ classes should be scheduled all in the morning or all in the afternoon, NOT in the middle of the day. IF you are taking AP Chemistry, AP English, AP Calculus or Physics at Marion Local, you are expected to be here during Flex time. 6) Once you are registered for classes, give Mrs.Dippold a copy of your college schedule so that we can make sure it works with classes (if any) you need to take at ML! PLEASE do this in early-mid August BEFORE the first day of school! Failure to do so may result in a scheduling conflict that we are unable to change. 7) Plan for transportation to/from your college classes. Check with other students to carpool. 8) If you have final exams at college that interfere with your MLHS classes, you must notify the office prior to the exam or you will be counted absent/tardy. 9) You must pay for any classes that you fail or drop after the stated deadline at the college. **ALTHOUGH THE MARION LOCAL DROP DEADLINE IS THE 3RD DAY OF SCHOOL, YOU CAN DROP A CC+ CLASS ACCORDING TO THE COLLEGE’S DROP DEADLINE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ADD A CLASS AT MARION LOCAL IN ITS PLACE. IF YOU DO, THE DROP DEADLINE FOR YOUR CC+ CLASS WOULD BE THE 3RD DAY OF SCHOOL AT ML. 10) YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU MISS AT MLHS WHEN YOU ARE NOT HERE. o Keep up to date on the current happenings/information.
